Buying a used Truck from Ryder

It’s been many years ago but I bought a couple of rigs from Ryder and they were well maintained with all maintenance records and receipts in a file that they had on site at the sales lot .

the ones I bought were not rental trucks that were used by dozens of random drivers

it had a companies name on the door (mine you could see where the AT&T decal
Had just been removed from the door )

but Ryder owned and operated and maintained the truck and the driver was a Ryder employee assigned to that company.

 

I know a guy who bought a volvo from Ryder which was a southern states company truck.
They gave him all records from day 1, he has had truck about 3 years, no major problems, course anything is possible at anytime with equipment but it was well maintained.
With an APU too.

 

Do a Rig Dig search on any truck you are interested in. Hire a mechanic to inspect the truck before you sign anything. Good luck

 

I used to drive Ryder equipment and it was the worst junk I’ve ever driven. Horrible location manager(s) [revolving door of them] and incompetent techs. The only equipment I’ve ever failed roadside inspections, twice, was that Ryder’s equipment. They nickel-and-dime the stuff to death. Then, when it went to the sale lot, they’d dump a bunch of money into the stuff, trying to make it all look cherry. No way I’d buy one.

You have to understand, a fleet manager’s job is to reduce the operating costs of equipment to the bare minimum, to get it to the end of the life cycle. If extended maintenance intervals use up the equipment, it doesn’t matter, because it’s being sold off, anyway. “Fleet-maintained” isn’t always a good thing. If you can find available fleet/company equipment where complete oil sample results and full maintenance records are available, then, that’s probably where you need to be looking. The oil samples will tell you a LOT about the equipment’s condition. In the world of DPF’s, the maintenance and sensor replacement records of that system are crucial.

 

My advice is don't get in a rush. If you got the credit (sounds like you do) and the available cash down I would find a private seller. But as @Eddiec said, you definitely want to hire a mechanic or someone to give the truck you intend to buy the once over.

 

Most of the Ryder sleepers I see on the road these days look pounded to piss .

 

I drive a 2018 International LT leased by my company from Ryder. Service intervals seem mighty long to me, 85k miles between oil changes. Having said that, at 325k miles my truck is running fine and isn’t burning oil. I’d note that I’ve had great service at some Ryder shops (Springfield, MO and Baton Rouge, LA) and pretty half ##### at others (Garland, TX, unfortunately the one we use on a regular basis).

I assume that they’ll give you the service records for the truck, so you can judge for yourself if they’ve been keeping up.

 

When I was looking for a truck a few months ago the first one I saw was a cascadia. Got in it and saw the ryder stickers left in various places inside the truck and looked at the odometer and engine mileage. There was over 100k difference between the odometer and miles on the engine, with the higher part being on the engine. And no explanation that made sense for how that was so. Needless to say I offered significantly less than what seller was asking. Eventually, he came down below what I offered to sell it to someone else, months later.
