That's not a knock at you, that's a testament to @Bumper and @navypoppop and every other older person for having the financial savvy and discipline of being able to financially retire at the present time. To be honest I feel bad for older people who can't find pleasure in life without working, that's a terrible burden that I would never wish upon my worst enemy. Good on you @navypoppop for enjoying life with your wife and 2 kids and your camper, that's awesome. Maybe you'll get some grandkids at some point down the road as well (or maybe you already do I don't know). Being involved in your grandkids formative years sounds 1000 times better than what any job could offer to you. Great to see you (and soon @Bumper ) enjoying the fruits of your labor doing pleasurable activities in the last (hopefully many more) chapters of your lives, that's how it should be. God willing I will be in both of your positions one day.truckerman75103, Bumper, Lonesome and 1 other person Thank this. -
You know it’s awesome to be financially able to retire, but there’s also no shame to enjoying work. I hate it for those who want to retire but just can’t, that’s sad.
@Bumper awesome for you and the count continues. For me trucking is my first step towards retirement, and I plan on hanging up the keys in 4-5 years myself, and then it’s onto semi-retirement while I wait for my wife to finish up her career.
I’m looking forward to showing my wife so many of the places I get to visit tugging freight around the country and if all goes well enjoying time on two wheels.truckerman75103, kylefitzy, Bumper and 3 others Thank this. -

I just want to say that even though I retired from working over 11 years ago I still miss driving the "big truck" almost daily. Being a son of a truck driver and riding in the seat of those B model Macks watching my father doing 2 arm split shifts in that tri-plex and then driving for 44 years myself it is always a passion that will never go away. Like I stated, all the changes that have occurred since my retirement make me glad that I do not drive today and I'll leave that to my son now driving. It is always boring being retired but you can come and go as you want and when you want, God willing and if the finances are there along with good health it is wonderful. There are no grandchildren for us to spoil either and won't be for reasons that I have no control over so we travel and enjoy what life passes our way. Sorry Bumper if I am taking your post and enjoy what plans you have for the future.

No problem guys. Its a discussion well worth having. Sooner or later we all get to this point when you decide to call it a career and stop the daily grind. I did it 17 years ago after 30 years in Law Enforcement. I was 52 and way too young to sit around and watch the grass grow. So I started driving as a way to earn some extra income and get cheaper health insurance for us. After the financial collapse of 2008 my wife quit working outside the home. It made it much more enjoyable for the time I was off the road and at home. Now Im on Medicare and she will be on Jan 3. So with that and out Blue Cross of Tennessee Advantage Plan we should be well covered insurance wise. I was ok at 52. Not so much at close to 70. Im tired and my shoulders are bad enough that I cant deal with these old heavy, rusted out vans our contract company uses. I do much better with the flatbeds because the load is on much newer trailers and not very tall so I have no issues slinging straps, and its one hook, deliver, and back with one drop. With a van it is usally one hook, drop at the receiver, hook a diff trailer to take back, drop it, rehook the one I brought, drop it in the door I pulled the scrap trailer out of, re hook the one Im taking back and go. The I have to drop it on the scale, re hook it and go drop it in the yard. Ill be honest, its getting to me.
Im very lucky to have a GREAT boss. I have been home for 12 days. Part of which our son and wife from Calif were here visiting. Im going back today and staying until Monday. Then coming back again to go up to Virgina to spend Thanksgiving with our oldest son and family up there. Back to work on the 29th and clean out my truck and done on Dec 5/6. I couldnt ask for a better understanding boss.
Dont wish away your life, just know when it is time to call it a day. -
Well a slight change of plans. Called the boss today to get my rental car ordered and he told me that the factory was shut down for repairs and cleaning of the smelter furnace so there was no need for me to come back. So I made a deal and I am now off until the 29th. Will then go back for two weeks and then clean out my truck and come home. So I will have a nice 25 days off. No complaints as we get paid when the factory is shut down. Id rather be at home than sitting in a hotel.

Well I am actually back in my truck. Came in on Tuesday and got a load up to Schofield Wisconsin. I'm up here and its 14 degrees. A tad cool for this SoCal boy but ill survive. LOL
The Farewell Tour has started. Hitting all my favorite diners on my way out! Life is good. The light at the end of the tunnel is no longer an oncoming train!!
