Hi, I'm JJ from newark NJ. I'm been a company driver for almost 5 years and now I'm planning to be my own boss. I have been searching for a truck for a couple weeks, that's something stressful for someone that want to start with the right foot . I found a kenworth T700 2013 with a paccar engine with 24000 hours and 1,034,000 miles on it for 28k, the truck and the engine are in good condition. How many miles can I put in before go to the shop so I can make some money before do overhaul on it. Thanks

Roll the dice. How do you determine the truck and engine are in good condition. You need to do some more extensive diagnostics to make those determination. If a overhaul hasn't been it should be.
That phrase "if ain't broke don't fix it". That is not maintenance on machinery. Do you have maintenance records for the truck?

28k for that is way to much. That’s a 10k truck at best.

engine and tranny is the least of your worries. Think about the after treatment system as well, that alone coasts as much as an engine overhaul to fix sometimes if it has one. If not then was it done properly?

Way to many miles, and $28k is too much as well. I would stay away from it. Repairs that you cannot afford will bury an owner operator.

Thanks for the reply, what kind of extensive diagnostic I should do? I'm going to inspect it this week, I still have the option to not buy it. So want to make sure I do right inspection on it. I might take to the shop and do the metals before I hit the road.

I did my research in truckpapers web site and you are going to find inoperable trucks around the same price, have you check the market this days? I didn't find any truck for 10k.

Have you checked the freight market these days? Nevermind the junk equipment. To start in a bad market with a million mile truck could spell a very short time being your own boss. Hope you have lots of money in the bank.

Before you sign any papers to buy this truck, take the truck in for a Dyno and Blow By test. That will tell you a lot about the motor. Also do oil analysis on all of the fluids. find a mechanic that you can trust and have him go over the truck with a fine tooth comb.
Yes, these tests cost some $$$but when done I pretty sure you will decide to run from this truck.
