OOIDA is continuing to lead the push for solving the nation's truck parking crisis. U.S. Senators Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) and Mark Kelly (D-AZ) have introduced S. 5169, the Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act. The Senate bill is similar to H.R. 2187 that unanimously passed the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure earlier this year.

    S. 5169 would allocate hundreds of millions of dollars to expand truck parking capacity. The funds would be used to construct new truck parking facilities and convert existing weigh stations and rest areas into functional parking spaces.

I’d say on average I run into a bit of a challenge with parking about once a month. And the reason being is I typically trip planned well in advance. And I keep a back up. Plus the longer you’re a driver out here the more you know about your secret spots along each route. I’m not going to say truck parking couldn’t improve, I’m just saying it’s not a crisis usually if you plan a bit. A lot of drivers choose to sleep in till noon every day. Then they’re stopping at midnight trying to find somewhere to park. I mean sometimes you have to drive that late but not always.

No doubt, I will catch "hell" for what I am about to say. It is not the taxpayers' responsibility to provide parking for private companies, and that is exactly what is proposed in this bill. I fully understand the parking situation, but if trucking companies are concerned about their drivers and making sure they are rested, the burden is upon the privately owned trucking companies, not taxpayers. Oh, btw, we never had this problem when most trucking was "team operation".

    Serious? Lol.

If everyone trip planned as well as you obviously can, and started their day at the correct time like you do. How does that change the quantity of trucks needing to park in a given 24 hour period?

Because there’s always gonna be some drivers that have to drive overnight. For example I have to drive maybe one or two nights per week on average overnight. The problem is these people that drive that way every day because they don’t want to start earlier. They want to pull into a pilot at 10 PM, too many drivers doing that every day.

Yet if a lot of these drivers would stop living like Third World animals and stop dumping the garbage on peoples property. A lot of these places would not have a problem with trucks parking on their property… But it is number one on the chart because it’s getting worse and worse with the slobs that are coming into this industry.
