    Hello there,

will NJ require to re-test driving skills and/or knowledge when renewing an expired CDL? Expired for ~ 3 years, unknown if it was downgraded first because of the med card or not.

Anyone here who has gone thru this?
Their website is no help. It only says „you may be required to re-test”, of course nobody picks up any phones either.

    Thanks in adcance.

    tscottme Thanks this.

It was downgraded in their system the moment the medical card expired.
They are under no obligation to tell you. But if a LEO ran the license he would get the latest and greatest information.

Indiana gives you 1 year grace period to get the medical renewed and in their system.
After 1 year you have to start from scratch as if you never had a CDL.
Most states are something similar. I don't think they would let it go as long as 3 years.

    Jacoooooooo and tscottme Thank this.

The OP is on the money about how useless the State of NJ is on this one.
Here are the FAQ'a for the NJ DOT:
    https://www.state.nj.us/mvc/pdf/drivertopics/CDL_FAQs.pdf

    retesting:
MVC may require retesting and additional fees to reinstate your CDL privilege(s).

    More questions:
You should contact your employer with any questions you have regarding this program. You can also call the MVC
CDL Unit at: 609-292-7500 ext. 5077.

I would submit an updated medical certificate to them. See if you get a notice that your CDL is reinstated.
Still getting the runaround? Call your NJ state member of House of Representatives for your voting district.
Let their office figure out this for you, a valuable voter and constituent.

Perhaps just submiting a self-certification in a category that DOES NOT require a current DOT card will have the same effect with the state and let the OP know if his CDL is still valid, which I doubt.

Studebaker Hawk and Jacoooooooo Thank this.

You go to their website and can't find out anything, you call their phone line and they don't answer, you get on this forum and can't get a definite answer, seems to me hitting them up in person at their business would be the next best thing.

Thank you, this helped a lot.
So the answer is there’s 3 years to renew before NJ takes it away permanently.

    tscottme Thanks this.

The way I read it is VAGUE. "MVC may require retesting"
Assume they won't require a retest and go forth like it has lapsed for just a couple of weeks. What do you have to lose?
The bureaucrats are so clueless you might win this one....

    Jacoooooooo Thanks this.

Yes, I know, it’s not me. It’s a friend who is returning to the US after being abroad. That’s pretty much what I told him, to give it a try, maybe they didn’t cancel his completely.
