If you can get a Class B CDL expediting carriers don't require a school but they will hire drivers to team or solo right out of school . They will allow a driver with experience to train a partner that hasn't been to school . There are expedite tractor trailers but I believe they require a year experience .

Nana... I think while we are skipping we should make some snow Angels too... :biggrin_2559:

I went the private school route, It cost $4,500 which included all license fee's and HazMat costs. I chose the school because they had a good student to instructor ratio, never more than 3 students to an instructor and often 1 on 1 instruction. They had a good reputation and were certified.
I had called several companies to gauge how they felt about the school and hiring students from it. I also asked the school if I could talk to some of their graduates and they let me pick the students to call. So I felt good about going to the school and the price was reasonable, about what the other schools costs, with the exception of the community college which was less. Our community college was booked and I was excited to get started otherwise I would of gone with the community college perhaps. Also, there is a program that pays for school if you are and have been unemployed for awhile. I didn't qualify for that and don't know much about it... it is called work force in action or work foce developement.

I do think some schools charge too much and you have to watch out for that. Also, talk to your school, I was able to get a lot of extra time in the truck with an instructor by being ahead of the class, I had studied the cdl manual and all so I didn't have to spend all that time in the classroom. Not all schools can or will do that, but mine did and that was a bonus.

I concur with Lavender. I think by going the private school route is much better as your not under any contract nor pressure to fulfill that contract. I would check out Roadmaster, Sage Schools, and see if your local community college offers a truck driving portion as part of their trade. Best of luck and remember, you do not have to disclose your sexuality if you fear of being discriminated.

Yo! What happened to my pic? I've never been anti-gay, but that pic was so funny, I got stomach cramps from laughing so hard! I just think it is fair that everyone gets to also enjoy it.

I am assuming that as a straight person you have never not gotten a job or been fired from a job because it was discovered that you were gay.

They don't call you in the office and say.... I see you asked to have next week off to attend the gay pride parade, and by the way, good job on your "We're here we're queer" sign, very artistic, anyway, good news, you will be able to attend the parade because we are firing you for being gay, so good luck to you and hope you the parade goes well.

It goes more like this... before getting into trucking I was working in a small office. They had hired this one salesman who was moving to the area based on his resume and phone interviews. Well, after they hired him he moved here and came into the office to begin work. Well, he was a very large guy and this was a very small office. He showed up early everyday and was doing a good job. However, there were several in the small office that did not like his size. Now, they weren't going to fire him for being a very large guy.. so, they started giving him all the bad assignments and leads which made it difficult if not impossible to meet the company goals and they hoped that by making it difficult he would quit. Only he didn't, he worked harder and met the goals. So, they up'd the goals and gave him crappier assignments and leads and only gave a few, telling him leads and assignments were scarce. He did his best and worked hard but they let him go for not meeting the company goals.
I can tell you this man was a hard worker and the only reason he got fired was because of his size. I was appalled by what they did and put in my notice and moved on...

I do know one guy.. a straight guy who lost his job because it was suspected he was gay.. He is not, but,.. His cousin came to live with him to find work and then get his own place... However, he lived in a one bedroom apartment, his cousin slept on the couch, but two men living in a one bedroom apartment made his co-workers begin to ask if he was gay and spread the rumor he was. He got fired just a few months later from a company he had been at for years.

Even if there are laws there will also be ways around them.

I guess there is nothing wrong with being a gay trucker. As long as they aren't delivering to Toy's-R-Us!

Thank you Lavender. Excellent story of discrimination.

Of course......now the "fat haters" will post about us over weight people.

I'm tired of haters. Really. It isn't that hard to like MOST people. Why even cranky old me has less than 20 people on my ignore list. Of course that list has been growing since I began my diet.
