I'm driving a 2004 Thomas Bus, 40 ft. Diesel (school bus) that has been converted to a band tour bus. I'm taking a band interstate for a month. Do I need to run an ELD? Do I need to stop at weigh scales?

I agree with runningman0661, but let me ask, what type of tags are on the bus? Also, watch yourself in states such as Maryland, as you approach the scales, the signs states "all vehicles over 5 tons", if I am not mistaken. I drove a private bus for several years for the CEO of a trucking company in Charlotte, NC, It was registered in North Carolina as a RV, I did not keep a log or fall under any FMSCA regulations.

Ok thank you, Do you mean is it running as an RV or as a commercial bus? I'm not exactly sure...

If I were you, I would make sure exactly how this vehicle is registered. This will determine if you fall under FMCSA or not. Does the band own the bus or is it rented or leased? Since the band is probably a group that performs for "profit" this could change the whole "picture" because then the bus will probably be classified as being a commercial vehicle. .

Okay thank you. The band owns the bus. Would you please tell me which context you mean when you say "how is the vehicle registered?" I think you simply mean "does the vehicle have a DOT or does it not have a DOT number?" Is that correct? Thank you, Grouch! Really appreciate it!

Yes! If I were you or the owner of the bus, I would contact someone at DMV in the state that the bus is registered and start asking a bunch of questions and in return start revealing exactly the purpose and us of the bus. You do not want to start out on the wrong foot and get say, some 1000 miles away and get "grounded" plus be the subject of a big fine. What state are you in???

Ok spoke to the owner... its registered as an RV in Georgia..... it is not registered with the FMCSA ... I think I'm good to not keep log books. But I appreciate you're focus and thoroughness on this subject, Grouch. Do you agree with my assessment here?

Yes I do. The owner was "smart" and you were too, you covered the bases before you ventured out. Have a good time.
