Sorry if I explain this badly it is a weird situation. This question is for Virginia if you need to know.

My medical expires next week and I need to have an exam but I currently have a foot injury that will disqualify me. It is a temporary injury that I will recover from in a month or two.

I have spoken with the doctor and he is almost certain there is some form of extension that could be given in which your license is temporarily downgraded until you can pass the exam. Problem is he doesn't know exactly what it is called and neither do I.

I was told his office would be looking into it with other colleagues but I am trying to do my research as well.

There has to be some way of going about this without losing my CDL completely and having to retake the road test and written exam. I really hope they don't take completely revoke my CDL because I just so happened to get injured when your medical is due.

Any help is appreciated thanks everyone!!

I forgot to add this injury can not be hidden so I am not looking For a way to game the system or anythingike that. I am just looking for the terminology referring to this extension of it does exist.

    Thanks everyone!!

I would find out of from the VA DMV what form I need to file and that would take the guess work out it. All the best with your recovery.

Go to your DMV tell them your situation forgot what it called exempt or non exempt? But they will guide you thru it

That's the plan but I was hoping to walk in to the DMV with a little more knowledge of what I was doing. As I'm sure you know when I bring this up they are going to act like they have never heard of such a thing and it's probably going to take them hours to figure it out haha.

    Appreciate the luck my friend

You want to "certify Tier Two", which is Excepted Interstate.

Your license remains in effect even if your medical expires, because a DOT card is not required for Tier Two.

That's what I did in Ohio. My wife has a CDL that she hasn't used in years, but went and certified Tier Two, and doesn't need a medical card.

Even if your CDL is downgraded to passenger car license, you have MONTHS in which you can submit a new DOT Medical Exam and have your CDL reinstated. You will NOT be required to retake the CDL driving test, endorsement tests, and pre-trip, etc. JUST MAKE SURE YOU DON'T DRIVE A TRUCK until you have that new medical exam.

I did the Exempt or except certification a couple years ago, while waiting on a required stress test. Once you pass the physical, just self certify again. I did it all online in Michigan. I later found out it was all for nothing, since physicals had been extended due to Covid. I should have asked on here. Could have kept working the whole time. That was aggravating to find out. Seems like I read Michigan no longer allows it. Search Virginia DOT self certification. Good Luck. Get well soon.

I have 3 DOT medical cards cause right now I’m trying to decide what company I want to work for but on my 3rd DOT the company doctor said he’s only giving me 3months cause he wants me to take a Sleep apnea test. I left and didn’t take the card. I currently valid for 2 years. My question is what that doctor said going to now show 3months on my license even though I will not take that job and I am current?.

The examiner is required to report the results of all DOT physicals to the FMCSA. Only the last physical will be considered valid. You will need to go get another physical done and when you do you need to let the new examiner know what is up. @Moose1958 can explain this better.
