Is it ok or not run my truck for 600 miles without a primary filter (before fuel pump)? I have a filter between the pump and before the head. I have a FASS (fuel air separation system) that just started to contually blowing the inline fuse. And without the FASS pump working, the fuel fiter on it starts getting air into it in about 40-50 miles. Not too sure why now, as my FASS has always still filtered without a problem when the pump quit. I've had a pump quit before. I have the primary filter head at my shop-600 miles away, and will reinstall there instead of buying one on the road.

First, the PRE-pump filter is a coarser SECONDARY filter and frequently more accurately called a fuel water seperator.

Your PRIMARY is between pump and the engine itself.

And yes, its okay for a short run provided:
    A. you have little (as in extremely little) to no water in your tanks and
    B. Dont mind the marginal risk of your fuel pump taking in some smaller particulates that would have been filtered out by your secondary filter. (Bigger problem the worse the fuel quality/cleanliness of your tank is)

Personally, i would just bypass and run it, but those are the risks. Water and completely unfiltered fuel running through the pump

Freightliner defines the filter between pump and the head on a S60 as secondary. I've owned one for 23 years, and when I go into a shop to get some, that's what is brought out. But that is moot. As far as water getting through, I am not so worried. I live in Colorado with low humidity, so I am thinking I am alright there. I drain my FASS water separater every 250 gal into an old Howes jug and never can see water, too. I was more concerned about the fuel pump. I really don't know what the inside of one looks like. I was thinking nothing could really be damaged by unfiltered fuel-but just don't know. Thanks for the response

I don’t think you have anything to worry about. The series 60 fuel pump is rugged. Same pump is used to pump some nasty stuff in other fields of work, so I’ve been told.
