    Hello,
I am new to the forum and (full disclosure) I am not a professional truck driver; although my interest keep leading me that direction.
At the moment, I've been looking at a dry van to purchase for some plans that will eventually take me out west and I have been reaching out to truck drivers in my area, sometimes just walking up to them parked / stopping in at the local Walmart, to inquire about the possibility of hiring them on maybe a day off to move a trailer that I've bought. Ultimately, I would like to learn more about the trade and the machinery (I have an engineering background) and along the way build a report with drivers in and around where I currently live.

They have power only trucking companies that basically move new trailers. Hiring them to just move access town would probably not a good value.

I think most people on here will give you information about trucking or the trucks if you want it. They have lots more computers on trucks today. That's how we can have automatic transmissions. They are not automatic like car. They are Automated Manual Transmissions. They took computers and sensors and GPS data. The transmission and engine talk to each other to work together at one unit. So driving it seems just light automatic transmissions but their is lots of computer technology making it possible.

I actually hadn't heard about "power only trucking". Thank you for the info, Brandt.

You might want to know about "load out" too. Moving an empty trailer you post it allowing use by the carrier for a week or two. They usually agree to move the trailer for next to nothing or even free, make money on the trip by loading it with freight for the run.

That's really smart and makes total sense to optimize the trip.

I actually did end up buying a trailer. It's having new brakes installed at the moment but I'm still struggling to find a driver open to moving it empty from West Virginia to Virginia. Is UShip a good place to post? If so, what do you think is reasonable for moving an empty trailer (with a single axle) 382 miles?
