Good morning folks. I am thinking of taking NV-164 from Searchlight into Cali. Looking at my Rand-McNally MC Atlas, I noticed that the road in Nevada is rated for commercial trucks, but in Cali it isn't. Have any of you taken this route? The Cali portion is only 12.5 miles or so, so how bad can it be?

Looking a Google maps, there apperars to be a drop yard in Nipton, CA. Trucks are getting there somehow.

Also give CA DOT/CHP a call to confirm if you can use the road.

When I look at the interchange (using Google's street views) where "Nipton Rd" meets up with I-15, I see no signage saying, "no trucks" (or similar) for use of "Nipton Rd"...when leaving I-15.

Also--I see no bridges or potential overpass clearance pblms on "Nipton Rd".

You will...however...either go thru...or go just past...part of an Indian Reservation.

That may be why "Nipton Rd" is not shown as STAA-approved.

    Your call... :dontknow:

Yeah, I'm sure the road can be used. I was just wondering if it was worth it. I'm trying to avoid the scales north of Mountain Pass because the commies in Kalifornia have sent CARB out there in full force. I read there were like 50 trucks in line there a few days ago because all of the old trucks are getting targeted. My truck is compliant, but I don't need a headache right now just in case. All you need is one power-tripping, miserable stormtrooper that is having a bad day, and he WILL find something to drill you with. And I certainly don't need to be in line for 2 hours because the Lord Masters in Kalifornia decided they want to be fluffed. I swear, if EVERY TRUCKER just stopped picking up and delivering for 2 days, we would have Kalifornia on her KNEES. Ain't it great to fantasize?

I live in Palm Springs area and go to Vegas 3-4 times a year "the back way" which takes me on this road. It is OK for trucks and is not posted. However, heavy rains can wash out the road, but it should be posted before you ever leave Searchlight.

Yeah, I'm really going out of my way to take this route, for the reasons mentioned previously. The rain and wind have been an issue this week. I'm heading to Wilmington to get my overheads done. I can get it done here in Vegas and be done with it, but the guy in Wilmington is the one who did my inframe. He did a helluva job. Finding a good mechanic is like finding a good woman. You don't throw either away because you think you found someone better.

My plan is to hop on the I-15 just north of Mountain Pass and head to Long Beach from there. So I won't be going through Cima or Kelso.

Don't know ... the bracket on the controller for the auto tire pressure on my trailer broke and I had it duct taped to the rail and still passed a level one at that scale.

But I do have some uncanny luck when it comes to DOT and popos. Ran a red light in front of cop once and he just asked me to be more careful.
