Question for all you guys, I'll try to explain it best I can...

I have a truck now with our farm name and DOT number that we use for hauling our own grain to the local elevator. A neighbor is looking to lease me on as an owner/operator with my truck pulling his hopper bottom trailer. The way I understand it is when I am running under his authority pulling his trailer I need to have his name and DOT number on the truck as well, that sound right? My question is am I still able to haul my own grain with my trailer on weekends and such when not working for the neighbor if I have both DOT numbers on the truck?

Also how does it work with insurance when going back and forth working for the neighbor and then myself?

You may only display one set of DOT numbers and carrier name at a time. You would need temporary placards to seitch between names, with "operated by" preceding the name and DOT numbetlr of your neighbor when operating under his authority.

You would also need a lease agreement that allows you to use the truck under your own numbers when he doesn't have work. Younwould be responsible for physical damage when leased to him, he would need to cover everything else and declare your truck on his policy.

Double check with your insurer to make sure they will not have any issue, there may be policy exclusions in place.

Also, check with your home state. If your truck is licensed as a farm vehicle, you may not be able to do non-farm business with it. (non YOUR farm)

Great catch Scalemaster! I wasn't even thinking about the farm tags. He may need dual registration, if available in his state. Good to see you on here again, it's been a minute.

That's another thing I was wondering about. I believe that's the way we have all three of our trucks set up is under our farm. So not sure how big of a pain in the ### the process would be switching one truck over to do both
