Buying a 2016 International Prostar N13

    Hello All,
    It’s been awhile since I’ve posted anything on here. Well after 8yrs of being a company driver I am going to try my hand at being an O/o. I came across a 500k mile 2016 Prostar with the N13 engine. I was told by some that this is not the Maxforce, others have said it’s technically the Maxforce but it’s the updated version after they corrected all mistakes of the previous version. First of all as I was looking over the engine I thought I noticed 2 turbos. Am I correct in that assumption?? Also I’ve done some research on this truck and reviews are mixed. Some say that the truck despite the normal everyday wear and tear is a reliable truck, however others say Run for the hills when it comes to this truck. I have not taken delivery yet much less signed any paperwork. I am just trying to do my due diligence before signing on the dotted line. Any feed back good or bad anyone can offer would be Greatly Appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

    The Prostar is a decent truck but the N13 is a problematic engine and is difficult to work on which translates to more shop time on the work order when repairs are required. It does have two turbos. The N13 is an updated version of the Maxxfarce 13. When Navistar came out with the Maxxfarce series of engines they were hoping to use a lot more EGR and not have to use SCR. It did not work out well. I would say that you could be buying the truck around when things are going to start failing. My advice would be to pass on it.

    N13 are better than the Maxxforce, but the SCR, DPF and DOC are all approaching end of life on the one you are looking at. Those are all big dollar items. The worst part of the N or Maxxforce engines is just how bad the turbos and egr valve/ exhaust back pressure valves become rusted and seized over time and they end up needing replacement. This can turn ugly because every line, hose or sensor connected to them also needs to be cut off and replaced. If the truck has had no work, then expect it.

    I really appreciate the honest feedback and as a result I 86’d the Prostar and went with a 2015 FreightShaker Cascadia The miles are a bit higher than the Prostar but I feel the Freightliner makes a better more reliable truck than International…I just need to get 3yrs of decent service out of it. Obviously I know #### is gonna break and need replacing just as long as it’s nothing major like a Turbo..Or a One Box or an Engine lol I’m hoping my first outing as an O/o is a good one and I’m able to make more money than I currently am as a company driver. That’s all I’m hoping for!!!
