Hi! So my dad is in his 60s he drove a truck for a while off and on because he got sick, he is better now but he had a career change he’s retiring soon and he says he always thought about being a truck mechanic. I was wondering if it is too late for him to learn. He is definitely not that healthy but would he be okay if he were to pick up a 2 year course? Like in terms of stress and overall difficulty mentally and physically would he be able to learn?

Well, heavy duty mechanic is a 4 year trade, check out your provincial apprentice board and you can find the program outlines by year etc and see what is involved in that aspect.

The job is physical though so it sounds like that may be an issue for him, but maybe not? Easiest way is to go spend time in a truck maintenance shop and observe even for a couple hours, and talk to people doing the job, see what they say.

There are certainly lots of mechanics in the 60+ age range

Its a physically demanding job. Plus it requires a very sizeable investment in tools. Even if just buying cheap tools expect to have to lay out $5,000 up front for the absolute bare minimum.

If he's just looking for something to take him into retirement, I'd advise trying a shop that does a lot of bench work - hydraulic component shop, powertrain rebuilds etc. Easier on the body.
