Now I didn't say everyone who does dumb #### here an dies was from out of state.NC has it's own share of idiots. Half those people I mention who die every year in rip currents are NC residents, but not sandbar residents. We're dumb to but not that dumb.
I've seen a honda and two pick ups get washed out into the Atlantic. One was a local the other 2 were tourists. Thought it'd be a good idea to park down where the waves break during low tide. Guess he didn't realize it eventually goes back to high tide.

Teenager dies when hole and dune collapse at Seashore - OBX Today
That should clear up any confusion. The Yahoo article sucked with giving info. As did most of the mainstream news sites.
Far as the holes...Yes, he dug INTO the dune. He didn't dig a hole on the beach to bury his legs in, etc. Far as the county is concerned they dont' care if you want to dig a hole in the sand while playing on the beach. Just fill it up when your done. It's been a big issue the last couple of years. People digging huge holes on the beach, and not filling them in. I'm talking 7 to 10 feet wide and 3 foot deep. That causes issues for the lifeguards who use four wheelers for rescues, and the parts of the beach you can drive on.
So let's recap - Feel free to dig holes on the beach, for seashells, to let your kid play, or just to have fun. Just FILL IT IN when your done. Simple.
2nd thing - Don't dig into sand dunes. They will collapse. You will die. An it will be a horrible death as you will pretty much suffocate slowly as your body is crushed and the air goes away. Sand is heavy. Especially when your trapped under a ton of it.
The area where this happened also is an area that is constantly damaged by storms. Frisco is in between Pea Island and Hatteras. The weak dunes are why we just had to have a new bridge put in as they got tired of constantly replacing the dunes, and highway after a big storm. It's also one of the areas where the houses are crumbling into the sea.
They also have some great food, an really cold beer on tap.
I'm chatty today. I blame @Opus.

The local 4x4 club runs a lottery every year to see how many rigs get stranded by the tide. I bet every year but I always come out low. There's no shortage of dummies here...native born and imported.
They have a whole complicated rating schedule for size of rig, depth to which they buried it, number and size of vehicles needed to drag the stranded one out of the surf. They also charge for their services on recoveries. If the dummy that got stranded objects to the cost they're more than willing to unhook him and leave him to the elements.Dale thompson, dwells40, Val_Caldera and 8 others Thank this. -

I bet those fees they charge aren't cheap either. I know here, if they got to pull you out of the ocean, your going to be paying out the nose. Not to mention the fines.
Does it make the local news for you guys like it does us? Its bad enough you lost your vehicle to the ocean, but now we will shame you on top of it. Might just be a southern thing though. They used to do this years past for drug busts, and dwis or any criminal activity. Your Name, Age, Town and the charge. All right in the paper.
Yall do that down in GA? @Opus
