It's especially relevant in the city since they make so many bridges 13'6" and thus make routing "impossible".
Everybody has their pet theory as to why but I've never seen anything official.

FWIW, I used to come from NJ to go to shippers on LI, and I'd use the Outerbridge, cross Staten Island, then take the Ginny Gangplank to the BQE, then to the LIE. I'm sure the BQE is a royal mess right now, though....

BTW, how on earth would somebody get the idea that you can't take a truck to Long Island? how do they explain all those HUNDREDS of truck on the L.I.E. every day??? Are they just a figment of our imagination??? -
