We purchased a semi truck through dealer. To purchase the truck through dealer .. we needed to finance through a finance company. We have our own llc but not m/c or dot because we run under someone else’s authority. Now the finance company wants us to get title switched to our name . Went to dmv they will not switch it because we didn’t pay sales tax. Said we need m/c number ?
Is this true even if we run under someone else’s authority?

My local DMV was confused at first when I went in to get a “title only”. They either wanted me to register it or pay tax on the current value. Eventually they accepted the cab card which shows my home state listed on it to exempt me from the tax and charged me only a transaction fee. I am leased to a carrier and had run with their base plate for many years.

That’s right. You use the mc # that you’re leased to, Usually there’s a form to fill out. Tax exempt as “Rolling Stock” or “Interstate Trucking”. May or may not need to show a copy of Lease agreement.

I used to buy parts in Wi. Tax free. Just had to fill out a form yearly that the Dealership kept on file. I used the Carrier that I was leased to MC#. I’ve also purchased Trucks same way in Michigan, using a Leased Companies MC#. DMV should know, it’s a common thing. Go back again. Take your Lease agreement just in case. And ofcourse your Title signed on the back, or with a release letter if showing a lien. They should have the Wi. Sales tax exempt form, or download one from the Internet. Seems I checked the Agricultural Box, because they didn’t have a rolling stock box. Might have been Interstate Commerce. You’ll figure it out.
