And yahoo’s we have to deal with in this mess because they want to drive posted speed limits on snow and ice…i’m more concerned with the idiots around me than myself on winter roads..

First real scare I had trucking in winter was when I was trying to beat a storm going up to Fargo. Rounded a bend on I-94 south of Fergus Falls, MN. Came around the bend and there was a truck jackknifed in the median with his trailer blocking a lane, as well as a box truck and tanker who ran off the highway. I had about 42k in the box and was only going 20-25 at best. Drives started to lose traction on the hill but I didn’t want to stall out in the middle of the highway. I had to feather the throttle very gently and almost went sliding into the ditch but thankfully I made it to the top of the hill. I decided that staying on the road was foolish and promptly pulled into a rest area to change my pants and inform dispatch that I wasn’t going to make my 0800 appointment. MnDOT ended up closing the whole highway minutes later. Didn’t reopen until 5 pm the afternoon.

Usually what i use as guide for most part in winter time is if i start to feel the drive breaking loose i will start looking for a place to park at also if i can maintain at least 40mph safely i look to park as well because any slower than that just burning up hours and not really accomplishing much at that point..frankly nothing we haul is worth wrecking over..better to get there late than never make it.

Good thing to keep in your side box in winter time is…kitty litter to throw under your tires for traction getting out of parking space..i also carry a folding metal shovel as well to break up ice under my wheels…

I was motoring along without major issues until that hill. It was a sheet of ice. That was my first winter driving a truck as well. Thankfully I didn’t wreck into anyone or anything. Had I been lighter there would’ve been a very high chance that I would’ve spun out on that hill
