When I was off for a few years I self certified in one of the "excepted" categories. Either Excepted Interstate or Excepted Intrastate. Either one will keep you CDL from being downgraded.

Opus and Diesel Dave Thank this.

I want to point this comment out. It is true. You can NOT drive any CMV requiring a medical with an expired medical. EVEN to get home. Almost all carriers have computer programs watching this. During my last few years driving I got a QC message sent by safety alerting me to expiration dates on either my CDL or my physical. I get it, life happens, and you put things off. Or you stay out for months at a time. I think I told this story before but will tell it again. I was delivering a load to a grocery warehouse near Dallas. On the way to my pickup in Waco, my Tractor broke down. Since I was just a few miles out of the metroplex they had me towed back to Dallas. While waiting I was sent to a hotel and took several days off. Then out of boredom, I decided to go get a physical. I had several months left on my current physical, but decided to go ahead and do it. When I got back to the hotel they faxed the medical back to my carrier for me. As drivers, we need to always be aware of expiration dates and our weekly and daily hours.
