Have you considered more specialized hauling such as pulling Hazmat loads. There are some outfits such as TSMT and R&R that offer higher paying loads.

John, following you will find your February 2010 monthly financial statement. We
are also posting your January monthly financial statement to the web at this time.
In looking at the February financials, you are showing a Net Profit of $13,944 for
the year-to-date period. This comes out to $0.590 cents per mile and is based
on 23,647 paid miles. You received IRA bonuses and detention pay totaling
$852 during the month. This additional pay added $0.081 cpm to your net profit
for the month. You also received a license bonus of $1,558 in February that
offsets license expense recorded in the Fixed Costs section of your financial
statement.
You are averaging 11,824 paid miles per month this year compared with 11,141
monthly miles you averaged last year. You were out on the road 54 days
through the end of February 2010 (92% in service) and averaged 438 miles for
each day you were out.
Your maintenance expense for the first two months of 2010 was $1,583 or
$0.067 cpm and your tractor supplies expense was $121 or $0.005 cpm. Fuel
costs averaged $0.422 cpm less fuel surcharge reimbursements of $0.249. This
results in a net fuel cost of $0.173.
Your tractor depreciation expense for 2009 will be $9,280. You are in the fifth
For the first two months of '10 I'm averaging $1.346 cpm. This is a little missleading because it includes $600 in IRA contributions and $1558 in base plate incintive pay. Which, as stated above adds almost .08 cpm. Taking those factors into consideration, I'm averaging $1.27 cpm +/-. The avg. fuel surcharge the first two months was .249 cpm.
I ran mostly upper Mid-West for these two months, and the poor fuel quality, extreme cold, ice/snow conditions, and the necessity to idle more than I like, all combined to cause an increase in fuel consumption. About .025 cpm more than the previous years avg..

When you say "poor fuel quality" is that because of the region you were running or because of the additives that are added for the winter?
