Bump. I'm now hauling tandem vans in the mountains, 600 mile dedicated run. For about 100 miles I might have 20,000lbs in the trailer, the rest of it less than 5,000lbs. Running at ~57mph I got my mileage up to 5.8. This is on winter fuel with very bad (BDRW recaps) rolling resistance tires. After installing the Bully Dog Power Pup my mileage is at 6.4. I'm hoping when we get off of winter fuel and I put some good rolling tires on I'll get close to 7mpg. Even considering switching to a 275/80 series tire on 22.5 wheels, which should be ok considering the speeds I travel. I'm running at about 1225-1250 rpm where this would put me closer to 1300rpm cruising speed. Mechanically I'd still like to try a high flow manifold and a FASS to help out efficiency.

I just bought a 2003 Western Star with a 430/500 DDEC4 Detroit, 15spd, 3.70 rears on 11R24.5 tires. I think if I switch to 275/80R24.5 tires and do some light tweaks this could be a 8mpg truck on this job.

FWIW other guys doing similar runs to mine, with stock 6nz engines, are getting as good as 7.75mpg.

    4" outlet on the turbo?

would you run a single 4" exhaust on that engine?
Get the larger outlet and downpipe, your boost should come up some too..

I'll have to look into seeing if that part of the turbo can be replaced with that off of another one.

that would be a wise course of action.

you have to consider the sheer volume of gasses trying to exit when your under high load.

my signature has twin 4" reducers and thats presenting a significant restriction. i would hate to see how a single 4" section would cope.

So that Bully dog works pretty good huh? Been thinking about getting one but wasn't sure if it was worth the $. Does it pull any better?

My truck's governed at 97mph, never went east of Saskatchewan. However usually the truck never went much over 65mph unless going downhill.

The Bully dog works great. My truck ran strong in stock form, and there's no comparison. I can go up any hill a full gear higher now if I so choose and the fuel mileage #'s don't lie. Last 3 fillups since installing it were 6.45mpg, 6.65mpg, 6.525mpg. I've never seen better than 5.8 before.

Just curious how long does it take to change the speed limiter with the BD? I never go to Canada I was just curious if it was something you could plug in and change quickly or it took a while.

The only part that is time consuming is having to download and install Microsoft.NET and a couple other bits of software. The Power Pup reads your stock file in probably less than a minute, you plug it into your PC where it gives you the proper tune for your engine, and it takes less than 5 minutes to upload the tune to your truck.

This was my experience, anyways. I know different engines take different times, Cummins takes 2hrs or something?

Like CMT said the actual setup on a CAT doesn't take to long. Once this is done changing the speed limitor takes about 2 mins...pretty much takes longer to get the unit out and plugged in than it does to actually change the setting.
