Flying that low, I remember having eyes exclusively on the radar altimeter or RADALT. You update the BARALT setting but I don't remember cross referencing it in that kind of scenario.

We would use BARALT hold to maintain the altitude when the terrain below is varied. RADALT hold was for operating down low exclusively over the water.

All that said, I haven't flown anything since 2012 and I was navy...this was an army aircraft and no idea how they're trained.
