At least back in the paper log days you could adjust your log for a small amount if you could make it to a safe parking area unlike the computer watching your every move. I'm not saying running 2 logs or an extra 2-3 hours but it was done without so many trucks on shoulders because some electronic wizard is watching your every move.

If you plan your day, you should not need to use the shoulder, I have no problems with parking,at all.

Well you can plan all you want but sometimes S### happens, or at least it did to me. As an experienced driver, I now have more control on where I work: lanes, schedules, local, OTR, regional,etc..

Part of preplaning is so you have the time to handle the unexpected, because I agree with you, there will always be something. Delays are are just part of the business.
