Hello all. First post, long time reader/lurker.

Firstly, I am dairy farmer with a Class A and a couple endorsements for farm purposes. I am familiar with FMSCR but by no means an expert. I have held my CDL for two years and drove under the agricultural exemption my state had prior to that.

I am ordering new tire sidewalls for my bunk silo. We use them to hold plastic covering over our forages.

I would like to deadhead to MI from NY and travel back with the load to save on freight costs. Figuring an O/O would charge a minimum of $2/mile I can save about $700; more if the freight cost is higher.

Unfortunately, my tractor-trailers have Farm registrations, meaning they are not apportioned, nor do I pay HUT. My solution was to rent a tractor and skateboard from Ryder.

I need to discuss fuel permits, insurance requirements, and HUT with Ryder. Do I need to ask about anything else?

Some specific questions I have for you all:

Do I need to be operating under an authority to haul the product I purchased from the seller to my farm?
Will I need anything besides my medical card and logbook?
Is a logbook even required since I am essentially operating Not For Hire?
Any tips for securing the load? I am figuring two pallets will be loaded beside each other (across the width of trailer) for most if not the entire length. I was planning on using two ratchet straps for every two pallets. The load will be 47,250 lb with 1,890 sidewalls running 23-25 lbs each.

Are you talking about a 2" strap? (a ratchet strap)? That won't cut it for 47000 lbs. Does Ryder rent dropdecks? Yes, you'll need a log book.

I think you have to have a business account with Ryder like a factory or trucking company. I'm not sure if a farmer can fall into that category. They can cover all your insurance and licensing needs if you qualify.

I know farmers are limited to a 150 mile radius with their own equipment to pick up supplies.

Have you included other expenses? Fuel will run you almost .50/mile. Ryder charges .11/ mile on top their daily rental fee. Motel rental?

If you run I-80, tolls are pretty hefty. It's like $85 to run all the way across NY.

Hiring an O/O, you would only have to pay one way versus two ways.

If you had access to tires, can you cut out your own sidewalls and save $$ that way?? I'm guessing that's what you need. Used tires are readily available.

I been to alot of ryder locations never seen drop decks. Dont use 2 in straps for that much weight dot would have a field day with you on that one. You will need a log book due to your going over 150 air miles. Not sure where your located if it was TX I might give you some pointers on where to go . try auctions I know you can get trls for a bit of nothing there

No, I was referring to the 4" commonly used on flatbeds.

I know better than to use the 2" 1500 lb capacity straps from Wal Mart. :biggrin_25525:

I included fuel, tolls, and the mileage rate. I'm in Western NY so tolls each way on I 90 will be $52 round trip for NY. $80 to cross Ohio twice. I did not include a motel as I priced a sleeper cab from Ryder.

I knew about setting up a business account with Ryder. I was going to call about that today.

also ask them if you need trip, fuel, and mileage permits for the particular tractor you rent. and NY HUT. it should already have that as long as you're renting it out of NY state. check just in case.
