i have an application in at a trucking school by my house (30 mi.)
and have four pre-hire apps out to werner, stevens, swift, and covenant. i have already found out werner and stevens won't hire me so that leaves swift and covenant. this route comes with me getting a (probable) high interest loan to fund the school, which company XXX will reimburse
i have also been in contact with P.A.M. transport who pays for training and my cost is $995 taken out of pay at $45 weekly and placed in an employee savings account compounded at 10% interest once i work for them 1yr i will get a check for that money MINUS the $995 agreed to pay for training (my calcs have that as about $500)

which one should i choose? (assuming either swift or cov. accepts my app)

panhandlepat, seems to me you are juming the gun here.If you are signed up for a good school you will be hearing from many recruiters.First order of business is to get thru school and get your CDL.Then is the time to start looking for a good company.None of the ones you have listed sound very good to me.If your school is a good one chances are you will be meeting a recruiter from Schneider, which is much better than anyone you have talked to thus far.Other options, contact Roehl and some other good companies when you are thru school and ready to sign on with them.

don't worry about it php. get into school and start your training. while you are there, talk to your lead instructor. either he, or the director will begin to contact companies on your behalf. at least that's what they did at my school. btw, those companies that turned you down aren't very good. not many good things said about them. if you are interested in flatbedding check out maverick, or tmc, mcelroy, anderson. these have tuition reimbursement except for maverick.

PHP, before you start running for your CDL, I would suggest this: Find out why those companies rejected you. Is it because you have too many moving violations, or you have some serious ones? Or is it a felony/misdemeanor in your recent past?
I am stressing this because I went to a CDL MIll, and got a few pre-hires (from crappy cos too), but when I turned in applications with them, they all said no, because of my MVR. The only yes I got was from Covenant, and even then I had to wait 5 months until one ticket became 3 years old, and could then be hired.
My MVR is still causing me problems to this day, only light at the end of the tunnel is that this year all the ytickets become 3 years old, so hopefully next year will mean I can get a job with a decent co.
In the mean time, you might want to try filling out an app for the Orange Army (www.schneider.com) as driver needing training, and see what they say. Best of luck to you!

thanks guys, those are some good ideas to consider to consider.

a CRE recruiter actually shed some light on the reason why my apps were turned down. i had a ticket in mid 2005 15+ over the limit. and i had one in sept. of 2006 those two tickets disqualify me with most major carriers.
my local clerk of court said that the first ticket that was from out of my state. wasn't on my DMV record, and that the state probably just took my money and "ran" so to speak.
the local school i was going to attend would not let me start without getting a couple of pre-hires. so i didn't get to go to school there.
today i am going to look up some more Co's on the web and apply online. we'll see what happens.

Well if your choices are few than I guess you will have to go with P.A.M. But don't look to make a lot of money. Unless they have raised their pay scale, their pay per mile is low plus miles are low. My husband signed a contract with them when he went to school and had to endure a year with them. We barely made ends meet. He didn't get many miles (average around 1800 miles at .22 cpm) long waits between loads and getting home was like pulling teeth. Like you said that speeding ticket is going to bar you from the better companies like Roehl, Crete and such. Good luck to you.

thanks for your input whispers. if i choose them i hope i have better luck than your husband did
their pay scale is now :
    0-3 months .28
    3-6 months .29
    6-9 months .30
    9-12 months.31
    and after 1 year .32
typical bottom of the barrel rates (i think some actually start at .26)
