I feel for both the trainers family and trainee. What is sad is all this could have avoided. BD hit it right when he said the keys should have been with the trainer including the spares or trainees. Every company should implement rules like this. No ifs ands or buts on anything. I think we all learned a valuable situation that will help us later down the road.

Lessons should be learned through mistakes not lives and loved ones being taken. May he RIP and may his family and the trainee be blessed from on with nothing but happiness in their lives.

There may have been a reason that the truck was running if they were working on the tandems. If you need to move the truck, then the keys are needed.

It seems there might have been a communication problem when the trainer wanted the truck moved. The trainee might not have understood the exact amount needed or might have had a problem with the clutch.

This is very sad, let's keep the trainers family in our thoughts and prayers and also the trainee. let's have us all have a safe weekend since its memorial day weekend with an increase in traffic.

Yeah this is a sad situation. Sorry for all involved.

Just a few weeks ago a tech came to fix my brake chamber that had let out all my air. When he was under the truck he told me to crank it up. I did, but boy was i nervous!!! All i could see was those drives rolling right over his body!

    thank God that didnt happen.

If all the air is out of the system and it's functioning properly, usually the brakes are engaged...until someone backs them off mechanically.

And I can't count the number of times I see two drivers trying to set the tandems on a trailer....one in the driver seat with the truck running and in gear and the other holding the handle out while bracing against the front wheel, motioning the other forward or back. It doesn't look very safe to me, but they do it all the time. The report was a little vague as to what was actually going on here.

Without knowing the full story, he may have been searching out the air leak so as to notify the company of the exact problem, which would allow the service truck that came out to do the repair to bring the right parts to fix it the first time. I know that's my SOP for any issues I've ever had with company equipment. Telling the shop "it's broke" doesn't really tell 'em anything, and it wastes their money and your time.

That bugs me when loaders go about loading a truck (flatbed, log, dump, etc.) without knowing the location of (being in visual contact with) the driver.

Sometimes you gotta man up and git-r-done....can't go getting all emotional over everything. Sure, someone died...but you have bills to pay and customers to want their freight delivered.

Yeah, it's sad...and it'll stay with him for a long time....but he should learn from the event, not use it as an excuse to quit.

You've been driving 6 years. You ought to know how to keep the truck from rolling by now, and if it DOES start rolling, you should know how to stop it BEFORE it goes far enough to run anyone over. Easiest thing to do? If you are searching for a leak/working on the trailer, leave the tractor brakes set. If you are searching for a leak/working on the tractor, leave the trailer brakes set. Either that or use wheel chocks.

Yep this is true. But still i was nervous which in hindsight is probably a good thing cause it made sure there was no accident. Sometimes you get so used to doing things you take em for granted and thats when trouble happens.

Plus i probably didnt describe the situation acurately. But whatever happened that day made me feel uncomfortable.
