I have read different threads and some people like them and others do not. The present 'deal' they have for me in Upstate NY is 4 weeks (20 days) of classroom/road training in Niagara Falls, 3 days orientation in Georgia (corporate HQ), and 5 weeks with a trainer over the road. No pay for classroom training, $450/week when over the road. $100 deposit for CDL, no interest, money is deducted after 45 days. 28 cents a mile after the 5 weeks.

Problem: cheapest hotel is $35. 25 nights=$897. NYS licensing fees add up to around $280 (that might include the $100 deposit).

I like the 4 weeks training for the CDL, but the hotel cost is a bit much. And the negative comments concern me.

    So what do you think?

Need to figure out what you need/want once you are ready to run solo . . . home time, pay, location, running area, etc, and then see which company meets the most of your requirements.

What works for one driver does not work for another.

I have been out of work for 8 months. The only issues I have are with the hotel cost and wether or not this is a good company. I know going in that I will be away from home a lot since I would be brand new.

Swift's options for obtaining the CDL may fit your needs better. I did start with Swift, but that was over a decade ago and I got my license through an independent school. The students there were able to finance their stay at the hotel if they were from out of town.

Check out some more of the threads and see what else others have to say about training through the various companies.

What's the best way to finance their training course? Would I be better off going to a local CDL school and then applying? I think I can get government help with the CDL locally.

It leaves you more time to decide who you want to go with, and you are not tied to a company for a set period of time to pay for your schooling. If there is a place near you and you can get help with the training, go that way.

All independent schools end up with recruiters coming in to talk to the students. It worked for me going that route, and I was able to spend my nights during school at home too!

    Just a FYI...........

Before you get all hyped up about a company, verify their hiring area, and make sure you meet their qualifications !!!

Hope your driving and criminal records are OK.

    Good Luck !!!
