I'm not disputing you exactly.... But I have stood there with the guy that matches up the teams and watched him look for people within 100 miles...
However, yes... He does his best to get them as close as possible...
He also does match up people that don't know each other, but like you said, once your with someone and you're not comfortable, you can stop running with that person.... But he will look for someone else for you to team with and put you with a new driver if available...
My honest, no BS, opinion of P.A.M.

I just finished orientation yesterday, I head out with my trainer tomorrow morning. I still have not heard anything about mandatory teams, it was not brought up during orientation (too much other information flowing). So, I guess I'll find out for sure after training. At this point it does not matter to me, I need the job and I am just happy to be getting out and getting started.

As far as the team thing goes, like Chip, I was informed that anyone being hired on that had someone within a 100 mile radius was going to be teamed up with someone for 6 months minimum. You didn't meet the circumstances, so you didn't have to do as such. My next trainee lives in Austin and I pick him up tomorrow, so I'll see what he's been told and go from there, but so far my last 2 guys from Texas were told they were going to be doing teams once they went first seat. Sadly, they both failed within 2 weeks of being on my truck and were both terminated. Third time's a charm, I hope. -

Ya I also heard all new PAM drivers will be teams for the first 6 months if someone lives within 50 miles of you. If nobody lives that close they say you will be solo until they find someone. 50 miles is pretty tight so it might have increased to 100 as some others have said here. PAM claims to pay 17.5 cpm for new teams and I have heard conflicting info on if you get credit for the miles your partner drives while your off-duty. I hope life is better than the horror stories I've read here..... but like they say there are always 3 stories, yours, theirs, and the truth. While with a PAM trainer I am told $300 a week before everyone takes a piece of the pie
Flippin burgers pays $14hr in some areas if you want to smell like soy & grease and develope cancer.

When you're running teams with someone, you get paid ALL of the miles. That's why they reduce the cpm. As a solo driver you'd start at like $.26 cpm.
Horror stories are everywhere. I've been with PAM my entire driving career, so I can't justify or confirm other company's stories and greener pastures. I've had the $7 paychecks and a week with $0 paychecks. It's just the way it is. Then I've had $1500 paychecks. But you never hear about those when it comes to someone's ##### fest.
Some people legitimately get screwed. That's when whoever screwed them should never be in the trucking industry. I can't find where a company actually screwed drivers as a whole, but I can find many stories where individuals in companies have screwed over many drivers. It really comes down to what you make of it.
