    I never heard this and can't find it in the book. I always log to the nearest 15 minutes; if it's 8:07, I log 8:00, if it's 8:08, I log 8:15.
    Anyone wanna shed some light on this?

    I need 8 hours of rest...how long does it take to eat, bath (wait in line for shower), change, relax, sleep, wake, dress, eat? (we haven't even mentioned getting a companion for the evening...searching, negotiating, doing the deed, etc...) It takes me 10 hours, and it runs out real quick if I spend any time on the computer or watching a movie. I usually end up with a 12 hour break if I' do all that! Splitting the break is just not something that ever works for me. I just run the way I like and log it later......

    If it was me, I would go off duty, call dispatch and tell them where the truck is (and document it), get a cab and look for a room while off duty. If the company can't be responsible enough to have a room for you, I don't see why you should be responsible for their equipment. But, I'm a wicked a-hole about crap like that, I'd rather get fired than violate the law for a company that doesn't take care of it's drivers!

    I make sure I always buy books with good carbon paper, not the crap they sell at the Pilot. Try some different brands, when you find a good one, stick with it. Dysarts Truck stop in Bangor, Maine sells great logbooks with really good carbon for 99 cents each! I always buy a dozen when I'm there!

    Makes sense to me, but that's not the way it's written in the rules for a split.

    You can take the two hours on line one or two, just as long as it's a break of some sort. But, the eight hours is required to be in the sleeper.

    Nothing says that you actually have to be sleeping, which ends up with eight hours of watching TV in the sleeper being worth more than the same amount of time sleeping in a motel. Seems like there really should be an exception made if you can show that you were sleeping somewhere else, but if there is I am not aware of it.

    They have changed this. You do not have to be in the sleeper.

    You must be off for a period of 10 hours either through off duty or in the sleeper, through a combination that equals 10.

    Otherwise, could you be off duty at home for a break if you have to be in the sleeper?

    The paragraph below comes from the FMCSA website. The only way around it is to show 10 consecutive hours of off duty in place of the 8 hrs in the sleeper.

    Sleeper Berth Provision
    Drivers using the sleeper berth provision must take at least 8 consecutive hours in the sleeper berth, plus a separate 2 consecutive hours either in the sleeper berth, off duty, or any combination of the two.

    I think you are confusing a 10 hour break with a split break.

    For the 10 hour you can be on either line one or two. You can be in the sleeper doing whatever, at home doing whatever, or pretty much anywhere doing pretty much anything as long as you are not working.

    For a split break, you can do that with your two hour break. The 8 must be in the sleeper.

    From the FMCSA website...

    Sleeper Berth Provision
    Drivers using the sleeper berth provision must take at least 8 consecutive hours in the sleeper berth, plus a separate 2 consecutive hours either in the sleeper berth, off duty, or any combination of the two.

    They removed the need to be in the sleeper period. You can go to a motel if you wish for your break.

    This only applies to a 10 hour break, because of the word "consecutive". It has nothing to do with a split break.

    Same thing with the word "consecutive" for a 10 hour break, so it doesn't apply to a split break.

    Really has nothing to do with what we are talking about, but I quoted it just so I'd have everything under the property carrying section.

    Same as I quoted before.

    If you are doing a split break, it says the 8 consecutive hours must be in the sleeper.


    The above is from 395.1

    Not seeing anywhere where it says you can be out of the sleeper on the 8 hours of your split break. Only place I see that allowed is if you are taking your 10.
