I don't see how you can bash Dick Simon when you know nothing about them other than what you've read here as you have only been driving a year. Dick Simon at the time before they went under actually happened to one of the best mega carrier's around. Mostly seem's like they were hard up for driver's but recruiter's were letting bad apple's slip through the cracks. They were a really good company though.

My dad drove for Simon in the 80's when he only had 10 or 15 trucks. I met him a couple of times and he was a good guy back then. I know his company had its ups and downs but overall Simon was good guy to work for.

Here's what I think is BS. My brother got in an accident when he worked for CR England. He got fired because he didn't tell his dispatcher about and tried to hide it. He went to Simon and was there for 2 weeks before they went under. Both of these companies are/were based out of Salt Lake.

I, on the other hand, have never been in an accident (not even in a car) and neither England or Central (both are Salt Lake companies) will hire me just because I live in Florida.

So if your hiring policy does not allow you to hire drivers from Florida, then how the hell were you able you hire my brother? Just curious.

He had no commercial driving experience whatsoever when he went to work for England. That was his first company. I have 2 years under my belt and they won't touch me just because of where I live. Central is the same way. Maybe England was just trying to make as much money as possible by hiring newbies wherever they could be found and sending them to their schools.

Its not that they dont want to hire people that live in that state its most likley that they dont have any freight out of florida so you would probably never get any home time. Just like USA trucking wont hire me because they arnt training for AZ right now at one point there was probably alot of freight coming out of Florida and they didnt have a problem getting them in and out then but now its difficlut.

They use to have one good contract near Orlando. They lost that while I was working at Central. I do not know if they have gotten it back since that time.
I do know that it was rare that they hired drivers from FL when I was there, and they would not hire any for a long time after loosing that contract.
The problem is that if you do not have much freight in an area it makes it almost impossible to get you home for home time, and they would have to deadhead you out, which costs them fuel.
So in areas with limited freight they, and all other company's have to have a limit on the number of drivers they hire in those areas.
Upper Michigan, the Dakota's, Montana, New Mexico etc, are all the same way.
They are very low freight volume areas, and this makes it so company's do not hire many drivers from those areas.

I drove for Dick from 1993 - 2000. I left after the Swift owners were positioning to take over dick Simon. No way was I working for Swift or any other affiliated companies. They were great people and it was a pleasure to run for them. I ended up getting on the Northeast dedicated fleet and ran like hell to NYC, NJ, Toronto, Montreal, Boston, ect. I was sad to see the skunk w/ the pirate flag changed. It was changed due to the fact that when Simon became the primary carrier for Albertson's, they did not want a "poison" symbol on the trailers hauling their products. (skull and cross bones on the flag). I still keep in touch with my old planner, Julie, and foudn out that Kelle started up Simon Transportation (?). I saw one of their trucks in NJ recently and it was good to see the ole' skunk back on the road. Every Company out there will have the haters and those who are pissed off at the company they work for, but I will honestly say Simon was a great company to work for. I wish Kelle the best of luck and hope to see hiim grow the company successfully. My last truck with Simon was a Volvo, #2009. My first truck was #319, a volvo.

hey buddy don't listen to jimy; I was at Central Refrigerated until 4, Dec. 2010 and you were right the first time; they suck! I was running 2500-3000 miles a week and they had the audacity to send me checks ranging from $113 to $206 consistently per week! I was only there about 5 1/2 months and I got paid right twice! I'm still tryin to get CPM due! Oh and get this; they stole about $550 from me under the guise of "excessive idle" a violation of the Employment Protection Act and the Fair Labor Standards Act (even if you signed to acknowledge the policy)! They seem to think all their drivers are owner op's; odd thing, i filled out an application for employment! I didn't make a lease agreement with em; OOPS! oh boy! I can't wait to send their CEO a message on behalf of myself and others similarly situated!

i was a driver trainer for dick simon. what made me mad was the fact that even if the trainer told them not to let a driver on the road they would give them a truck and set them free. and when i started with them i was told i would be sent home for Christmas and yet we had 247 drivers sitting in atlanta that where from FL that they would not send home and if we went on our own we had to clean out our trucks.that was when i left the company.
