Hi everyone, Been reading all the posts on hear and I am currently in school at the USTDTS in Fenton, Michigan. Been putting in alot of applications and doing all the research I can in order to made the right decision on which company to start with. Have contacted Werner, Swift, Prime, Arnold, USA Truck and WEL Companies so far. Also done research on Transport America, Conway, Schneider, and US Express. The recruiters fill your head with BS and tell you one thing one day and another the next. Is there anyone out there from Michigan who has any advise on which companies to avoid or which ones are tolerable. My brother works for UPS and a good friend works for PAM and I am fully aware of the trucking business just not that familiar with some of the companies. I have a wife and 4 kids and unfortunately here in Michigan there are no other jobs to look at besides OTR Trucking. I am willing to put in my time and sacrifices for a year or 2 until I gain the experience to get in with a local company. Any advise would be great and Thank you ALL in advance for all you do to supply products and services to everyone in the country. Drive safe and live well!!!

Welcome fellow Michigander, the only advice I might toss out there is to look for companies that have a terminal in Michigan. I see you have a family so my guess is you will want to be home as much as you can while driving OTR. If you go with a company that doesn't have ties to the area it might cut back on your home time. Just something to consider.
    Good luck

Thanks everyone, Problem being that Michigan is not a go through state they say...like Florida...so that makes it a problem for getting home on a regular basis from what I have been told. As far as finding a company with terminals in Michigan that will be hard to do. They are few and far between. Unfortunately with no experience I know that I will be away from home for at least the first year. I am looking at Stevens Transport right now. since I have been unemployed for the last year a lot of companies will not hire me. Prime,Schneider,Werner and some others require 3 current years of employment history. Well, anyone who is aware of the current enonomy issues and the fact that Michigan has the highest unemployment rate in the country should understand that looking for drivers in Michigan without any gap in employment will be hard to find. I am looking forward to getting on the road and putting my time in so that in a year or 2 I can hopefully find a local run or possibly get into UPS where my brother works.

Hello fellow Michigander, I see you are attending a school in fenton so I assume you live around the Flint, Saginaw, Detroit, area. Take a look at what company trucks are in your area out on the highways as you travel back and forth to school. That will give you an idea of who is delivering and recieving in your area. That might help you decide what company to go with. For instance, lets say on your way home after school tomorrow out on I 75 you see 5 schneider trucks, 5 Stevens transport trucks, 3 pam trucks, 5 CR England trucks a slew of locals like ACC, Yellow, Meijers, etc. You could research those companies and give one of them a try. Good Luck
