I bet that statistically a higher per centage of drivers smoke than does the average population, and I'm certain that doesn't help.

I think a lot of weather or not you are healthy has to do with what you do while going down the road, and what you do when you are not behind the wheel.

If you are running down the road with a bag of doritos and nacho cheese dip on the dash sucking Coca Cola from a 55 gallon drum nessled between the seats, while taking breaks to suck down a few m&m's and a hershey bar while chain smoking cigarettes. Yeah, its gonna catch up with you.

If when you hit the truck stop the first thing you do is head for the all you can eat buffet at the Iron Skillet, and and your idea of cardio is 3 hours later hurrying to the lav to make a deposit then grabbing another keggar of soda on your way back to the truck to flop in the sleeper. Yeah, its gonna catch up to you.

On the other hand, if you limit your sugar intake, try to eat right, some good protien, some salads, some fruit, you dont smoke, then you may be fortunate enough to live a long happy life.

You really want people to look at you like your crazy, put on some shorts and running shoes and actually run a few laps around the truck stop before you take a shower. It is amazing how much better it can make you feel.

you are the product of what you do and consume.

I will also say it took me 1 summer rig welding in south texas to realize truckin wasnt so bad. Call me crazy but I think spending all day wearing welding leathers in 100 degree heat sucking welding smoke isnt going to be the best for you, I sure as hell will take the health risks that come with trucking any day, they are way easier to manage, all it takes is a bit of effort to not allow yourself to become sedatary.

Among the other stuff posted, the human body doesn't like being jarred and shook around. The average trucker lives to about 60.

There are plenty of people who dont work in trucking that sit on there butts all day. but they see there doctor and take there meds. truckers don't go to the doctor and they don't take meds, and they smoke more. yes, i know that some drivers take good care of themselves, but the majorty don't.

I think that's kind of funny actually, because you're implying that the "average" person is guaranteed XX number of years to begin with. So how can anyone say that ANY activity takes years off or adds years to your life? Who's to say that I wasn't supposed to die at whatever age?
I say live like there's no tomorrow, and don't worry about it, because you can't change it any way. So why waste what little time you do have by worrying about what you can't change?

Apparently I must know many of the above average. I know of many in their 80's.

They also were more active and pretty much ate what they wanted and did not drink or smoke.

    Funny thing is...

I heard on the radio today that smoking cigarettes also shortens your life by 10-15 years...

So what happens if you smoke and drive at the same time...will your life be shortened by 30 years?

The study that the poster posted said

Trucking takes 10-15 years off your life..
Smoking cigarettes takes 10-15 years off your life...

So which is more of a hazard...to smoke or drive??:biggrin_2557:

Now wait just a dang second here...
if I drive, it shortens my life...
if I smoke it shortens my life...
add in the alcohol and internet porn, and I'll be dead before I was born...
    thanks, I feel AWESOME now...:biggrin_2559::biggrin_25525:

That's the trick. No drinking and smoking. That's gets many. Truckers have it worst because they smoke in closed quarters.

I think smoking has a lot to do with it, I am 28 and I have never smoked a cigarette, I meet a lot of guys my age and younger who are heavy smokers who are already showing signs of health problems from it. It is pretty sad.

You mix smoking and obeisity and you really have issues.
