My Pre-Trip Inspection

    I couldn't find athread with detailed Pre-Trip examples so here's the one I had to learn yours may vary..Hope this is helpful.


    1. The Aproach
    Clearence lights: Bulbs & Lenses not cracked or broken
    Windshield: Clean no cracks or chips
    Grill: Not bent or damadged
    Head lights & Turn signal lenses: Not broke or cracked
    Front bumper: Secure
    Lic. Plate: Secure & up to date
    Underneath: No oil/coolant leak no listing or lean

    2. Passenger Side
    Coolant level: Full and grn in sight glass
    Radiator: No leaks-secure-hose clamps tight
    Shroud: No breaks or cracks
    Fan Blades: No breaks or cracks
    Alternator: Wires & mounts secure
    Water Pump: Secure-not leaking
    Oil Level & fill tube: Full
    Air intake: Clamps are tight
    Turbo Charger: No oil leaks- mounts secure
    Exhaust pipe: Secure-no leaks all the way to rear
    Frame: No cracks

    3.Drivers Side
    Air filter: Secure
    Air intake: Clamps are tight
    Gear driven air compressor: Secure-no leaks
    Governor: Mounted securely
    Hoses & Wires: No breaks freys or leaks
    Fuel Filter: Secure-not leaking
    Frame: No cracks

    Steering components
    Power steering reservoir: Secure-No leaks-secure
    Steering Column/Steering Shaft: Not bent-Max 10 degrees
    Steering U-Joint: In place-Well greased
    Steering gear box: Secure-Not leaking
    Pitman arm: Fastened securely-not bent/cracked
    Castle nut & Cotter key: Tight
    Drag link: Not bent
    Castle nut & Cotter key: Tight
    Control Arm: Secure-not bent
    Leaf Spring hangers & Mounts: Tight
    Leaf springs: No cracks or breaks
    U-Bolts: Tight
    Shocks & shock mounts: Secure & Tight

    Seven components of S-cam Breaks
    Air Hose: Tight no leaks
    Caniaster & Clamp: Secure & Tight
    Push rod: Not damaged
    Slack adjuster: 90 dgrs angle-No more then 1" play
    S-Cam: secure at both ends
    Brake shoes: min. 1/4
    Brake drum: No warps or cracks

    Front Wheel & Tire
    Inside rim & inner seal: No cracks or leaks
    Front tire: 110 lbs inflation-good cond-4/32 dpth
    Outer rim: No cracks
    Lugs: Tight
    Outer seal: No oil leaks

    4.Drivers side door area:
    Driver side window: Clean no cracks
    Mirrors: Securley mounted
    Door hinge & Latch: Functional
    Grab bar: Secure
    Fuel step/running board: Secure-no ice
    Fuel Cap: Tight-Rubber gasket in place
    Grab bars: Secure
    Storage compartment: Door functional-washer fluid full
    Left turn signal: Lens & bulb not broke or cracked

    Tractor protection valve: Securely mounted
    Red supply line: Secure to trctr protection

    Not damaged
    Blue service line: Secure to trctr protection
    valve & glad hnds of trlr
    Not damaged
    Drive line & U-Joint: Secure-Well greased
    Exhaust pipe & muffler: Secure & no exhaust leaks

    6.Drive Axle suspension
    Wheels & tires
    Outer rim: No cracks
    Lug Nuts : Tight
    Seals: Not leaking

    S-Cam Brakes: See pg 1

    Drive axle suspension
    Tortion bars: Tight
    Airbags/Bellows: Secure-Fully inflated
    Leaf springs: Hngrs tight-sprngs not cracked
    U-bolts tight
    Shocks & shock mounts: Tight & secure

    7.Fifth wheel cplng
    NO GAP BETWEEN 5th WHEEL PLATFORM & TRAILOR APRON

    Skid Plate: Secure-No cracks-well greased
    Release arm: All the way in & seated
    Pivot pin: Tight-Not damaged

    5th wheel securely mounted to tractor frame-mounting bolts tight
    locking jaws are secure around the shank portion of the the trailer king pin
    Trailer king pen: Not bent or damaged

    8.Rear of Tractor
    Mud flaps: Secure-not dragging
    Rear trctr frame & cross members: not cracked/dmgd
    Tail lights: Lences/Bulbs not
    cracked or damaged
    Lic. Plate: secure & up to date

    9.Trailer
    Front: Good condition
    Side
    Front marker light-reflector: lences/Bulbs not crkd/brk
    Winches: Not bent or damaged
    Reflective tape: present-DOT aprvd
    Landing Gear: Fully raised-shoes attatched
    secure to frame-crank hndle
    stowed
    Frame: Frame & cross members not
    cracked or damaged
    Middle marker light: lenses/Bulbs not crk/brk
    Spare tire: Secure

    Outer Trlr tire: 100 lbs inflate-good cond-2/32 min.
    Btwn duels: No rocks/debri-Tires not rubbing
    Inside trlr tire: 100 lbs inflate-god cond-2/32 min
    Inner rim: No cracks
    Inner seal: No leaks

    Rear of Trailer:
    Reflective tape: present * DOT approved
    Tail lights & reflectors: Lenses?Bulbs not crkd or brk
    Mud Flaps: Secure-Not dragging
    DOT bar: Tight & secure
    Lic. Plate: Clean & upto date

    10. Check all outside light & turn signals: Working properly

    11. In Cab Insp.
    Start Engine: Note build up of oil pressure

    Safty Equip.
    Fire ext: Fully charged-secure-locking
    pin in place
    Seat belt assembly: Intact & fuctional
    Three reflect. triagles: In red box(may vary)
    Spare fuses: In tool box

    Five primary Controls
    Steering wheel: No more then 10 dgrs play
    Clutch: 1 to 2 inch free play
    Brake pedal: Functional
    Accelerator: Functional
    Gear shifter: Intact

    MISC
    Overhead Comp: Clear of debri
    Windsheild: Clean-no cracks or chips
    Wipers: Blades/arms in good cond
    Dash board: Clean-free of bebri
    Mirrors: properly adjusted
    Air Horn: working order
    Elect. Horn: working order

    Right turn-left turn-4-ways-dimmers: working properly

    Gauges will vary from truck to truck I'm sure so I won't list all the ones I had to do

    12.Air brakes
    Air loss test
    1.Put truck in gear
    2.Turn engine off
    3.release clutch
    4.release Parking brakes(push in red & yellow brake valves)
    5.Hold break pressure with pedal(aplication at 40 psi)
    6.You should lose no more then 4 lbs in 1 min.

    Low Air warning test
    1.Turn key on(do not start engine)
    2.Fan brakes down to 60 lbs
    3.Low air warning light come on(should)
    4.Turn key off

    Emergency Brake test
    1.Fan brakes down til both valves pop out
    2.Emergency brakes will apply between 20 & 40 lbs(should)

    Parking Brake test
    1.Push clutch in
    2.Start engine-note build up of oil pressure
    3.Put truck in nuetral
    4.Release clutch
    5.Build up air pressure
    6.Release trlr prkng brake when air pressure reaches 60 psi
    7.Put truck in 1st gear when air pressure reaches 80 psi
    8.Test trctr parking brake-let clutch out til you feel tug
    9.Set Trlr brakes-pull out red brake valve
    10.Release trctr brakes-push in yellow brake valve
    11.Test Trlr brakes-let clutch out until feel a tug

    Service brake test
    1.Push clutch in
    2.Put truck in 1st gear
    3.Release prking brakes
    4.Roll ahead a few feet then apply brake pedal firmly

    PHewwwwwwwww...That's all Folks..yours may vary so take from mine what will work for you..:biggrin_255:

    Our PTI's start with checking the tractor for signs of damage, leaking fluids or leaning to one side or the other, then we have the in-cab and tractor/trailer brake checks......
