Seems to me there is a country that has the death penalty for DUI. Can't remember which one it is now. Seems that it was a few years ago somebody was talking about it on the news. . .

Well it's not the enforcement end. I have locked up hundreds of drunks. First offense they almost always get a smack on the hand. The second if within 10 years from the first, they ususally get a few weekends. Third and subsequent maybe 2 weeks, 30 days or 60 days, depends if their license is suspended by then or not. Then if they seriously hurt or kill someone they will definately see some time. Until the liberal judges and defense attorneys have a family member, a friend or someone they are close to get killed the drunks never get serious time. You can probably understand my frustration, I remember one drunk me and my partner locked up three times in a month for DUI. The guy never had a ticket until that 3 week period. However, he came to court on all three DUI's on the same day and only got a 60 day sentence. But I will tell you from my perspective and also speaking to probation officers, almost 80-85 percent of people on probation will violate somehow. But I will still go out and look for drunks and lock up as many as I can.

I'm sorry, I didn't make that clear. I didn't mean to imply that the Officers don't do their part. On the enforcement end I meant the Judicial system. They are the ultimate enforcers of the law and this is where I meant no enforcement. I know you guys do your job in locking them up, it's the Judge they see after the fact is where the problem lies. And I thank you for your efforts in making our roads safer.

This is very true about the courts.
Get a good lawyer and have them dazzle the jury or the judge with b.s.
My ex brother in law got caught several times and got slapped on the hand.
Then he finally got hammered and spent his wkends in county, but went to work every day with the police taking him to work. His job was hauling milk in a tanker...

Another time when I worked for a road service outfit we winched a guy's car out of the pond. Yep he was drunk. cop shows up and takes him to jail. We did'nt call, he saw our lights and stopped to see what was going on.
Well I go to court. wasted my time.
The guy got off on a time frame issue.
Yep he was drinking, but the booze did'nt kick in untill after he wrecked..
Well that's how is lawyer spun the tale.

He may have been right. When I was towing there were a lot of bad wrecks that didn't involve alcohol or drugs, just plain stupidity. A lot of people died for no real reason.

I moved a guy in from Germany and he said you practically have to take a college course to get your license over there. Don't know why we still hand them out like free candy over here.

No he was drunk when he wrecked. I knew the man and his wife at the time.
