Are Detroits generally considered the least expensive to rebuild?

I was told by two different shops that pulling a fargin head on an 05' ISX was around $11K. Just to pull the head, that aint going any lower.

40-46 labor hours as the entire front of motor has to come off, and its a twin cam motor. Which adds tons of time to the deal. Then if you need it, $4K for a new head, and a $1500 parts kit. Nearly $11K total.

Sorry, not trying to hijack thread. Just wondering if the ISX needs to go off my radar and another motor brand ON, when I get ready to purchase a different truck. Cost of a rebuild is definitely something that needs consideration before buying a truck.

In MOST applications I've seen you need to pull the radiator out AND take the hood off... no big deal BUT it adds lots of labor to the bill. No need to pull the rad with a CAT or Detroit except maybe on some of the new aero jobs. The ISX head comes out the front of the engine...the others drop in.

I look at serviceability when I buy a truck...I could care less about chrome, style, etc. If you can't SEE the engine how in the hell can you work on it?

because the ISX is a twin cam and the design of where the cams ride in the head and the front structure plate, the cams must be pulled out before the head can come off the block. stupid design if you ask me but I just work on them!

I talked with the leader of the Cummins ISX design team at Louisville several years ago when the ISX was new. We talked about the twin cam design and we both agreed it was a good way to design the engine with one cam actuating the valves and the other the injectors.

I asked him about serviceability and he mentioned that it was the easiest engine to service of all... did he fib just a bit?

One of the other Cummins engineer's was pretty much slamming CAT's HEIU injector design saying it was too complex... I guess i didn't agree with him then or now.

I was told that if my det needed a cam & cam bearing replacement, it would not be expensive, dont even have to take the head out, but a 4-14 cummins, you would have to take out the block , cause their cam is in the center of the block, & lot more expensive. dont know how true this is.

Don't have to pull the block just the radiator.

    Kinda forgot about this thread...

My final bill was $11,300.00. Full in frame using CAT parts... rebuilt the head using all new valve springs and new exhaust valves. The injectors were re-used as well as the turbo.

Despite all the rumors of $15,000-$20,000.00 CAT rebuilds, this puts my cost right at what a Detroit or ISX would cost for an equivelant rebuild.

Note... I had the work done at an independent diesel shop that does many CAT rebuilds.

here's the offending cyl. liner that caused the problems... my advice don't use cheap coolants.

Another shot... this is how dirty an engine gets when you don't idle BUT run extended oil changes (50,000 miles)... not bad. The engine was being reassembled by the time this shot was made but the parts never made it to the parts washer....
