I was in a T-600 spending the night outside of Tallahassee one time. I pulled in forward, rather than backing in because the space was straight across from the pump I was at and I didn't want anyone to grab it while I turned around. The next morning, I got up and did my pre-trip, had breakfast, went back to the truck and took off. About 20 miles down the road, DOT pulls me over for an inspection and I'm wondering why. I found out pretty quick.

It seems then front corners of the bumper had caught on the curb when I backed out and where now pointing straight forward on the truck! Fortunately, they were hinged and the bumper cover was composite material so I was able to just butt-bump them back into place, but I must have looked like an idiot driving down the road like that. They didn't cite me, but I did have to adjust my trailer brakes before they would allow me back into service....

First off, Happy Birthday Gears! You ripped 'er off good. I do admire your attitude about the whole thing. You are a stand up guy.

 

Kinda cool when you're the boss and you're the one responsible for punishing you for something you did to your truck, huh??

It does add to the positive nature of your postings here and I think you have influenced new drivers the way they should be influenced.

Sorry about the bumper, but at least it wasn't someone's car or truck you hooked it on. I'm EXTREMELY lucky. For some reason, all of my screw ups haven't bent, scraped, or broken anything. Lucky. I have had to wait for the 'ol leg to quit shaking a time or two.

I'll tell one on myself from back when I was young and stupid. I'm older now. I was a real hot shot with too big of a head. I used to deliver to a place every morning that had a really dusty gravel parking lot and a long cement open air dock. I would FLY into that place, make a swing to set up to hit the dock, then FLY backwards as fast as I could and come to a near stop and just barely touch the dock. Since the dock was all open, it didn't matter where you backed up to it. I'd just back up to it as fast as I could in the most open spot. I really thought I was something, and I was...a d*mbazz. Anyway, I'd do that every morning and when I went inside, the girl that signed my bills would always say, "You sure can handle that truck!" Talk about pouring gas on a fire! I did it EVERY morning. To place emphasis on what I did, I'd run and jump up on the dock without touching it with my hands. One morning, I did the same thing, as usual. Naturally, I could never see too good, due to the dust I stirred up. I whirled around, flew into the dock, jumped out to run around the tractor to jump up on the dock. That's when I saw THE OWNER OF THE WAREHOUSE'S new Mercedes Benz. :smt107 I had backed in right next to it. My trailer was about two inches from the car. I HAD NEVER SEEN IT! A half a truck length over, and I'd have TOTALLY smashed it up against that dock. That was my first stop, too. I weighed around 70,000 that morning. I walked inside to see the OWNER of the company standing there, white as a sheet. I got a real good lecture about how I WAS going to start driving in HIS parking lot, right in front of the girl who always told me how good I handled the truck. I was LUCKY that morning. I could just see having to explain how I crushed a new Benz into a little cube in a customer's lot.


By the way, Gears, did I see you parked in Okmulgee, OK to spend the night a few days ago? It looked like an ex Summit truck pulling a 48' spread reefer trailer as I drove by. Parked next to a Taco Bell with a few other trucks in front of the Orcheln.
