Great article in Popular Mechanics this month about these three company's shipping abilities. The PM staff sent three packages marked 'Fragile' and 'This Side Up' using these three carriers in which packaging was stored sensors which could record temperature, g-forces, and flips (as in turning it This Side Down lol).

    • Which carrier flipped the package the most?
    • Which carrier fluctuated the temperature the most?
    • Which carrier spiked the package with over 6 g's several times?

So it is a guessing game?

I'm not a subscriber to popular mechanics.... So I'll never know the answer!

My recent personal experience with two carriers.......

UPS........ package weight of 20 lbs going a distance of 800 miles took 5 business days plus weekend and thanksgiving day.

USPS package weighing 40 lbs going over 2000 miles took 3 business days.

From the tracking info it was like UPS picked up the package on monday and left it in a warehouse all week including thanksgiving and then sunday afternoon got it moving and eventually it made its way to my house. I didn't realize that taking 5 days off company wide was the policy for a holiday.

Normally I request UPS but I'm not real happy with them just now.

I've been on a UPS dock before. I was impressed with the the operation and the clean facility. Any place that man handles the boxes are going to get tossed. I always use the USPS when shipping. My experience is regular shipping is just as fast as the priority shipping. They go to the same hub and means of transportation.

I'd say hub location has alot to do with the speed of a package. If you ever tracked one before, some bounce all over the place.

Something I never seen before the other day. I was at our local post office. Here comes a FedEx driver inside and drops off about 10 boxes?? Evidently they have some kind of agreement. Since I live an hour north of Chattanooga, maybe it was expedited stuff that the USPS relays to Chattanooga and FedEx grabs control again there??
