Cummins egr seems to constantly have problems.poor fuel mileage ..code 155 and code 131 and seems egr is stuck open... anybody have a fix for this ??? How about blocking the egr with a plate as they do in the dodge cummins ? is there a way to remove the egr and make it close or clean it ???

I am not familiar with the ISM, I drove an ISX for a good bit. I found that you can either block off the input from the exhaust to the cooler on mine, or fix the valve to be permanently closed.

Pull the pipe apart before or after the valve. Then figure out which way the butterfly valve turns. Measure to an edge and then you can put a self tapping screw in from the side that will hold the valve closed. Use a stainless steel screw though. Almost no corrosion that way. The end of the screw will hold the butterfly valve from being able to open, helping to keep exhaust gas from entering the intake.

This doesn't solve the ever PITA problem of the leaking EGR coolers though. That is why a plate closing off the exhaust before the entire EGR system and piping is the best bet.

Thanks !!! your are a great help !!!!!!!!!!!
So the plate would be a good idea.. I am thinking of heavy gauge aluminum so that it will seal well ...is there anything else I shouild do?

I tried some stainless plate for one I was making. I also used some high temp RTV on it to help the plate seal and not get a bunch of exhaust gas leaks.

I was on I think the 3rd version of my plate design. I first tried aluminium but found that the exhaust temps were starting to damage it as well as the corrosion factor. Then I switched to galvanized and the corrosion wasn't so bad. I had some stainless sitting around so I figured I'd make a pretty shiny one that no one would see. LOL

So you have had good luck with the galvinized and stainless ???
How Long did the aluminum last ?
Any related issues ?? (leaking , etc )
How long does this fix normally last for you w/ stainless ?

    Thanks Again,
    Rich

Stainless hasn't had an issue as of yet. Been on there about 8 months now. It seems to handle the heat and corrosive nature of the exhaust gases better. The RTV helped a great deal to provide a good seal. Make sure you use the extreme temp RTV sealant. It needs to be able to handle at least 1200*F.
