Crete/Shaffer or Heartland

from what i understand heartland does pay more but less miles..i heard bout 2000 to 2200 miles a week at heartland. lots of short runs

I don't think I have ever heard anything good about Heartland..I know there is alot of long time employee's that love Crete/Shaffer.

 

I work at Heartland, but almost swapped to Crete this past summer.
I would go with them. I get ok miles at Heartland and I am home most weekends, but this is not the case in some of the terminals.
Also Heartland pays short miles and Crete pays Practical. So you will get paid for more of what you do.
I almost always get better than 2200 per week in paid miles. But I regularly run 300-500 more than what I get paid.
Also Crete has better benefits.

On the refer vs dry thing it is your call. I would go with dry for more drop and hook. But many people love reefer.

 

I would go with Shaffer over Crete, seems like refrigerated loads keep you running or they used to keep me going good. When I did dry, I did not ever get to run very hard, although; I was not w/Crete. I hear Crete is a good company. Looks like you could get on with either Crete or Shaffer and switch if you dont like one or the other.

 

Also remember if you haul a reefer around you can also haul dry freight. So keep that in mind.

Not always. There are a lot of shippers that will not load a reefer trailer because of weight issues - pallets of product have to be "cut", because of the extra weight of the ThermoKing and the reefer fuel tank, in order to avoid being over gross weight.

Also, there are paper companies that will not ship rolls of newsprint on a reefer trailer - the serrated/ribbed floor causes damage to the rolls of newsprint when they're stacked on the floor.

FWIW - I drive for Crete, and if I had a choice between Crete/Shaffer and Heartland... I'd go back to school and study to become a Pharmacy Technician.
