garmin has 3 map update plans:
one year: (get 4 updates within one year)
one update: (can get any time)
or lifetime: (get any time as long as your device is working)
the map cost money to NAVTEQ/Nokia. Someone is paying, for sure not Garmin.
you have a choice to pay upfront now at a discount rate for the lifetime update (garmin keeps some, and pays to NAVTEQ for the life time update program),
or you save $200 upfront and buy 20 shares of Nokia stock. when you need a new map, selling Nokia(Garmin) stock and pay for the map update.
i think it is an insurance game. -
I thought TND used Navteq too... -
how do i get rid of construction maps?
-
in the fine print it says "only until the products useful life expires" which means when they replace it with a new unit you aren't gonna get free maps anymore. If you click on the end user agreement it takes you to a page where you have to purchase a $90 card which is your subscription to the "free" map updates. always a catch.
as for removing construction maps im not entirely sure you can do that as its part of the unit database -
if the unit has the suffix of LMT

Garmin has a big legal team: the fine print font is soo small on its web::
""
Free Lifetime Map Updates entitle you to receive up to 4 map data updates per year, when and as such updates are made available on the Garmin website, for this specific Garmin product only until this product's useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier, whichever is shorter. The updates you receive will be updates to the same geographic map data originally included with your Garmin product when originally purchased. Garmin may terminate your Lifetime Map Updates at any time if you violate any of the terms of the End User License Agreement accompanying your nüvi product.
²Free Lifetime Traffic Updates may not be transferred to another person or another Garmin product. Lifetime traffic extends for the useful life of your Garmin traffic receiver (as long as you own a compatible Garmin GPS) or as long as Garmin receives traffic data from its traffic supplier, whichever is shorter. Traffic content not available for all areas. See www.navteq.com/rdstraffic for traffic coverage areas and www.garmin.com/traffic/fm/navteq.html for program License Agreement containing complete terms and conditions.

Have had it rout me through neighborhoods but just some quick common sense and
preplaning I have been able to avoid trouble. -
Driving south on US 77 south of Victoria, TX heading to Pharr, TX from Houston, TX the unit just came up with "Routing problem, no truck route, blah blah" was still on US 77 and no more route info. Went to setup new route using the history and got it back about 10 miles down the road. I notice the truck floating above the highway on the unit before hand, thinking its on another road I assume. In Pharr had me routed through some nice neighborhoods along Jackson Rd when I was heading south to Military Hwy/281, um I don't think so.
Mark Kling Thanks this.
