I found out from other drivers at the company I work for that if a driver damages any equipment the driver has to pay for it out of their own pocket.
I'll give an example, driver tears off trailer door, company takes $50.00 a week out of drivers check until it's paid off, total $ 450.00.
Is this a standard practice with trucking companies ?

As long as the damage was not intentional or malicious why should a driver pay??
Accidents happen,...To many and the company will get rid of a driver,...
But why would anybody work a outfit that treated drivers that way??Repo and wildbill123 Thank this. -
Good way to keep your drivers paying attention! I think it is good they do that. Too many drivers take company equipment for granted. You go to pick up a trailer and its brand new but has been beaten to death because drivers don't care. They just as soon drag it down a telephone pole then go around it!

With all due respect making employees responsible is part of the real world... maybe not yours but it IS pretty much standard everywhere else.
If would probably fire the guy... BTW the teamster company I drove for considered a scratch the same as a major accident.Injun and wildbill123 Thank this. -
Company paying for damage to company equipment seems like it should be the cost of doing business. Can't say that I have ever been asked to pay for any damage that I have ever done, nor do I think I would work for a company that expected me to.
I was lucky to find the right jobs in the beginning, and even luckier to have found a good job to be working at now. I really feel for those just starting out as drivers, who have little choice but to take any job anywhere just to get the experience to move onto a place that will treat them right.wildbill123 Thanks this. -
Seems like the driver just has to figure it in as a "cost of doing business" to work for this company, and if there's a better deal elsewhere, move on down the line.

if the driver does damage such as rip off a door, then IT WAS the drivers fault as the driver DID NOT make sure the door was secured before backing or pulling out. it is now a question or two of how the company handles this...if the driver pays, will they reduce that to an "incident" or hit him with an accident...????
