BigBadBill: Thanks for that pointer. Being an i/t geek by trade, I have the full version of Acrobat and even with that it can be easier to print, fill out, and scan stuff. Great tip that'll I'll be looking into for myself to avoid the $$$ for more copies of Acrobat.

 

Why Oregon? Is your reefer even California legal?

 

That's for that weight mile (or whatever they call it) tax, you don't have to get that to be apportioned for OR, you just have to stop at the POE and get a permit. I don't plan on going there either, but you never know.

 

Question: why is your(his) apportionment $1400 while mine is almost $2400. Mine is in California but I know many other states are close to $2400 as well.

Point: you need the apportionment for OR to run in OR. The trip permit is only for road tax and does not replace the lack of apportionment.

 

Best I understand it, running a lot of miles in some states that have higher apportionment fees makes the next year's plates cost more. That part should be the same no matter what state the plates are from. Then the home state charges a fee(s) for the tag and for doing the apportionment, etc. IIRC, TN charges about $140, maybe some states are much higher, I don't know. I've only had mine two years, the first it was $1415, then about $1460 the second, just for the sake of comparison.

 

Most states pro-rate. That may be the case in CA. Also, if he gave a different estimate of what miles he is going to run than what you have that can make a difference. Most people start using the estimate provided by the state but I have seen a few that have an idea of what states they are going to run in.

 

So on that $17 download, did you find that online? Or did your phone blow up when the authority went active and you took one of the calls? I was searching and only found scammy looking sites offering that along with checking it daily for $35 or more. I can check it myself for $35!
