I talked to a driver the other day he was hauling cars ,but only 3 at a time behind a Chevy Kodiak using a Goose neck trailer. He was saying he didnt have to go by the HOS for doing this .So my Question is why or why not . any Info on this would be helpful.

Maybe he stays within the local boundary's. I know some people that haul cars that have been repo'd all they do is load them and take them to the auto auction.

We would need more info if this is not the case.

I am not good with mileage yet I have not been out on the road in a truck yet except with a friends dad when I was younger.
There is a clause that if within 100 air miles then he does not have keep a log book.
There may be other reasons why he may not have to comply I just do not know all of them.

Does the driver have a us dot number on his truck?

If he can do 4 trips in a day sounds like he is within the 100 air mile radius.
If he doesn't need a CDL then the mileage goes to 150 air mile. I believe he would need @ least a CDL though. Only NON-CDL holders can go by the 150 air mile radius.

If I had destination to destination I could tell you, but I don't have that option at home

Sorry not much of an answer for you, but I am betting that is why. He should be clocking in and out or tracking his hours he does work though somehow if he is within 100 air mile radius.

It depends on state laws. FL and WY that I know of are two states that enforce the 10,000 lb and up law when used in commerce. You'll have to do the full blown DOT regs, CDL, authority, insurance, log book, permits etc etc etc etc etc. Its hardly worth it.

Rand Mcnally atlas Say's 174 miles Hmmm. I wonder if he is flying under the radar and hasn't got caught yet ? He said to me he gets $100 per car . So 3 cars down = 300 , three cars back =300 times 2 more trips = 1200 bones per 4 trips . 174miles/ 60mph = 2.9 hrs lets say 3 hrs per trip =12 hrs driving in fourteen hr day ( thats 1 hr over his 11):biggrin_2554:I would say he is pushing it a bit, and thats not counting any on duty not driving time .

It all depends on state laws. Or how willing they are to enforce the laws. With that set up he is well over the 10,000 lb law and I am certain he is over the 26,000 lb law as well. That would clearly put him in full DOT rules enforcement. He just hasn't gotten caught yet.

I seriously doubt CA would allow him to do that!!!!!!!!

I use to get paid 150.00 and that was usually made in about 30 sec I will tell you that not all vehicles were picked up in 30 sec but that is they way it went I was the repo man and sometimes I would get extra for taking it to the auto auction.
The biggest score that I made at one place was 300.00 two vehicles and then one that I wrote and told them I needed the vehicle and would pay for gas to get them to bring it to me from montana after gas I made 400.00 they were po'ed at the car lot so after I assured them the lot will get a high bill they were more than pleased to bring it to me. The lot did not like my quote for $ 1000.00 to go to montanna they offered me 500.00
I told them that I will get the car as soon as possible they never knew how I got it ha ha ha car lot.

Heck alot of times I made 750-1000.00 per day but they went out of busniess they were one of the buy here pay here lots that would finance anyone with enough cash phone bill or some other utility bill.

They wanted me to go to mexico to get a car at the border I told them go get it yourself I did not have enough bribe money for the cops down there.

But I did not need a dot nuber or any other license but my regular dl and a F350 wrecker of course.

I loved waking up the neighborhood they would laugh at the guy that lost his car then the funny thing the person that was laughing the hardest I went back the next week to get his car he did not learn a lesson from his neighbor to make his payments.:biggrin_255::biggrin_25521:

Different operation MGassel. In CO they don't bother the hotshots, just like TX. But wait until you get to WY. I know, I had to learn the hard way with WY.

But that is a funny story about the guy laughing the hardest got his car repoed the next week. I'm not sure I've got a big enough set to repo. I have an aversion to being shot at.
