Im thinking of becoming a owner/ operator. but have low money to get a high dollar truck. Have found some that are close to what I can afford. But a friend of my wife told me that to haul for anyone, The truck can only be new to seven years old. It can not be over that age limit or companies will not look at me. Ive been school trained and had no luck in getting hired as a driver. My question is can I get a truck thats older and will someone contract me to haul freight for them? IM looking at trucks from 12 to 20 years old. I really like the job of driving trucks, but its hard to get work in this field now. help

The driver shortage is epic right now. Forget about age of truck. If you can't get qualified as a company driver you will have a hard time getting brought on as an O/O. Plus your insurance is likely going to run you more than your truck.

Bigger question is why can you not get hired?

trying to find out how I can be a ower/operator. I was told by a friend of my wife the truck can or has to be new or only seven years old. Any older than that, I would not find a company to hire me. the ones I can afford are all to old for use. they are 10 to 12 to 20 years old. Are there any use left in these trucks or should I just give up and be homeless and a bum. I like driving trucks and went to school and graduated.

Well with no money going into this the "homeless and bum" part is just a matter of time. You need to be a company driver first and get some experience first.

Ditto on what Bill says.Go with one of the training companies;learn about the trucking business first. You might not like it or might not make it.Just because you went to school doesn't mean anything;that cdl just gets your foot in the door, now you have to gain experience.Once you have a few years insurance rates get cheaper.

Had CDL license since the start of having to get these license. And had them for a long time. as far as driving a truck, got that from my last job as a mechanic and a certified inspection for north carolina. and that 23 years and 9 months of driving and fixing heavy trucks. picking them up bring them back for the service for the city i worked for with that many years.
