    Couple questions:
    1. when my DPF regenerates, it makes an unpleasent smell, sorta like a metallic scent. Is that normal?
    2. more importantly, have there been any studies to show if that has any adverse health effects on drivers, short term or long term? I believe that any exposures to anything chemical not normally in our enviroment that smells that bad, probably isn't healthly.
I tried looking on several search engines and could not find any credible info. Can some one help out? thanks!

You posted this back in '09 and no answers? Lol, shame! Where is the love these days? Okay, now for my short answers.

1). According to the Volvo manual in my truck, the manual states that during the REGEN cycle you may smell a slight pungent odor which they consider normal and harmless. (What a load....) moving on.

2). Just like with all new technology, no one will know the full effects on anything until people start dropping like flies.

I'm sure smelling it for 3 seconds won't be harmful, just as taking 1 Tylenol isn't harmful. However, pound back 8 Tylenols, and be prepared to look for organ donors, immediately. So, I imagine smelling this for a prolonged period of time wouldn't be very conducive to ones health. Of course, this all depends on what, exactly, is being spewed out during the regen process. I did a little looking, and couldn't find an answer to that, but, I'm also lazy and didn't look to hard.

I found that during regeneration the exhaust contains carbon monoxide. Considering that the regen process suddenly burns a high amount of particulate that has been accumulating for many hours, imho, the levels would be even higher than "regular" exhaust. I wonder how much all of us will get from the class action lawsuit? ;)

It IS dangerous doing the regeneration. Heating metals to those extreme temperatures produces noxious gases. Especially with the new alloys! Ask any welder. Don't stay in your cab while doing this, stay clear of ignitables and don't have any people nearby.
These 'new and improved' engine designers kill me.
By GOD there will be less diesel particulates in the air due to the Diesel Particulate Filter, but more noxious gas odors and dust devils from the engine fans. Well done, engineers!
Now how about that class action suit?

Didn't you know when you became a truck driver you gave up your right to have good health? It's written on the long form of your medical card in small print!
Never stay near a truck when it's doing a regen . Have you noticed while walking through a truck stop you'll have to cover your mouth from all the trucks idling at night? The older models smell something awful, but then we're suppose to be super humans aren't we? Lol

I agree with you. Never be in a truck or near a truck when doing a burn out of the Diesel Particulate Filter. Regeneration in the "new and improved" trucks can take from 25 minutes to 50 minutes, so plan accordingly. All that extreme heat from the burn-outs tore a hole in my exhaust pipe not to mention extra heat causing damage to engine components like starters, turbos, wiring to the computers which can totally mess up your day if you have more than 7 computers controlling engine components.
Give me an old retro truck! Sometimes I think I'd be happier in a "Jed Clamplett truck"!
