I once worked with a driver who was 84. He refused to retire as long as the docs would give him the go ahead. He was as srpy and ornery and energetic as any young-un.
What was funny (I thought)- I once took his truck to be inspected, and he had so much junk food stored in there, cakes and cookies and chips, etc, etc. And he was the fittest 84yo around!
How old is too old to think about becoming a Company Driver?

Sorry my lil possum of love but being over 60 does not make us untouchable.
My husband was 61 when he began the process and turned 62 during his schooling. He is currently 64 and as we all know just had heart surgery. Not only does our company still want us but others do as well.
I myself was 52 when I went into school and will be turning 55 this summer. Gifts are accepted.Laner99 and rubberducky68 Thank this. -

......
and i still do not see him getting a job at his age. as for that 84 year old (1nonly spoke of)) he must have been driving since the coming of Christ. in fact, it may even be one Christ's brothers...Leon...Phillipe, Hector, or Rexnard...

Texas-Nana Thanks this. -
Not arguing about that.....just about being 60. And I figure the 84 year old wasn't a newbie either. As for who drove Jesus' truck......I believe that was a team by the names of Bubba and Leroy.

...as quoted in the book of "GitRDone", Chapter 2, verse 16.
And to the OP...go for it. Much rather see someone with some proven reliability out here than many of the younger know-it-alls today.
Good luck! -

in all actuality, when i worked for the LTL company we too had a VERY OLD driver that worked part time..he was some where's between 80-85...and that ain't no lie. he was also a driver in the military in WWII as well..
his "normal run"...??
Pawtucket, RI (02) to Elizabeth, NJ (01)...... on the weekends....talk about traffic...(I-95 north and south) on those days. But the old guy did it. I'll give him that...but then too, as "your friend", he'd been driving since a teenager (or even younger..!!) last i heard he had officially retired about 5 years ago...(anyone here that works for my former employer 02, would know of him)
but for the o/p, i do not see it happening, but who knows, maybe he'll get lucky and someone will hire him. i just fear the stress of the job will be too much for him, and if he ain't on BP meds now, he will be......
as for the old guy that worked at my former employer..?? i do hope he is still alive and well. i read the obits daily (to check and see if i'm in them) and i haven't seen his name either....to me, that's a good thing.... -
Go for it and ignore Reruns negativity. There are plenty of drivers your age that are out there and just starting out. Your big mega carriers may not touch you but your small to mid sized companies will take a serious look. Your age will actually benefit you as long as your in good health. Trucking companies want somebody who is mature and not going to hot rod thier rigs and hang at truck stops all day, a habit that most young truck drivers tend to have when first starting out.
Hang in there and good luck. -
