Turning wrenches on 1 is far differant than driving 1. They call them Driptroits for a reason. How many Cats have you bought fuel for on a regular basis?
Alot of it is learning to properly drive the engine. You can't drive a Cat like a Detroit and expect to get good mpgs. If you drive a Detroit like a Cat you will be in the slow lane all the time (not just most of it:). I have owned Detroit, Cummins and Cat. I am in it to make money and to enjoy my work. I prefer Cats. Matter of fact I think I have yellow running through my veins.
    I even pee yellow.

the driptroit name comes from the older ones like 6-71 and 8v92's--they always seemed to mark their spot--and every thing else--good engines--but a bit slobbery
the series 60 engines leak no more or no less than any other modern era engine---cats i have found seem to be a bit drier than others--but i have definately witnessed a fair share of oily cummins--any engine with crappy maintenance will leak---

Whats laughable is the CAT hating.

Just proves there isn't much rational behind the hating.
I had a 3406E (pulling a flatbed) that got north of 7 driven right.
Stick that in your hater pipe. :yes2557: :biggrin_255:
Running no more than 65 and less than 60,000 gross. No night time idling.
Bigger loads, running faster and idling for comfort all made it drop.

I had a C-15 that got 5.8 pulling a 7 car trailer. Some of the worst mileage trailers to pull. Running 70/75 too.
Drop it to 65 and it'd be over 6. Tank after tank after tank.

i think regardless of what engine it is--they can all be good--or they can all be anchors---its so much more than the engine---is it speced right for the job it is doing?--is it being operated correctely--and is the maintenance good on the engine
to say one brand is crap and one brand is the answer is pretty narrow minded and childish----but everybody has their good expiriences and preferences

You guys can hate and bash all you like. I care not. Lol. If you read my post I made no real preference to any. I just chose the Cat for my truck due to the fact that I personally dislike the egr S60. I've not personally seen one or driven one that runs correctly 100% of the time. If you have one that runs well and are happy with it, great. I'm very happy for you. Also my experience with Detroit service has been less than I like to call good. Usually takes a while to get it done. Mostly due to them being so closely associated with Freightliner. I prefer Paccar and cat for speed of repair service and for how I've personally been treated when dealing with them. I'm not saying that these weren't isolated incidents. They very well may have been. Just my personal choice. Thx.

IMO: well rebuilt non EGR series 60 is better new ISX with DEF, EGR, SCR and all other emission crap.

The best engines are built before 2003.

As optimal EU engine, I'd say Euro-3 engines, but not 11L renault and not MAN D20/D28 (Maxxforce).

All engines leak oil the S60 biggest problem area is the lower section of the rear housing. They do leak there!
This is a fact, But to insinuate that they leak more than any other engine is false. That designation is the "E" model CAT, Many times I have had an "E" apart to the extent all there was left was the block on stands in the frame.
I love Cat, made nothing but money working on them. Look at a new cat and think of the money to be made when they get a little older $$$$$.

Yeah, my series 60 is not a greez box, but some oil in front seal, and around oil pan

yes that rear structure on detroits --the way they seal it is kinda crappy--but the newer sealants seem to do a better job than the original red stuff
