Exactly - it is going to be the interpretation by a company or another state.

In South Carolina - Careless Driving = 0 (that's ZERO, nadda) Points
Reckless Driving = 6 Points and is Serious

IMO it is, in this state, a method to collect revenue for various rural and small towns. Picture this: rounding a 35 mph curve, doing 30 mph; notice the 6 local cops with radar guns, see blue lights, get ticket for less than 1" movement within your lane - charge? Careless or negligent driving. Why? Not speeding in a speed trap aka revenue generation.

The last person I spoke with that received one of these charges said the above illustration is what happened to them. It cost them a job with USPS because careless and reckless driving are not recognized as separate violations. It should be obvious by the points that they are not the same and that when the laws were written it was meant to be a LESS serious violation than even a "less than 10 MPH over" violation. It just isn't interpreted as such by those who lump both charges as being one and the same. An example of that can be seen by the posts in this thread. People just do not understand the intent of the language used for the violation.

The fines are high $285 - $300 to a 4-wheeler driver and many rural towns actually prefer to issue those because of the extra revenue. If you doubt this, find a way to check out tickets issued in New Ellenton, SC and see how many of those they award drivers during speed checks - or just check any known speed trap area (you know, the speed limit is 55 and drops to 35 with no advance warning that the speed will be reduced (check Springfield, SC). If you aren't speeding and they are needing revenue, it isn't hard to find something.

(**Springfield finally changed their signs so that they now have a "reduced speed ahead" sign but I promise, you best be at 35 BEFORE you hit the speed limit sign on highway 4.)

If the officer offers to "cut you a break" on a less than 10 speeding charge do yourself a favor and do not accept that break if it means a -0- point "careless driving" ticket. The interpretation will hurt you.

The main problem with the careless driving charge in SC is the wording as in many states those words mean the same thing as reckless driving.
Maybe call it a "Revenue Generation Driving Award"?

Maybe you can find a SC company to work for who actually understands that the careless driving charge does not carry points and is NOT reckless driving. Good luck to you.

Wow! CCCowgirl, now I understand why I hear there is a difference between the two. I've never heard of such an absurd system.

But then you nailed it, it makes no difference which one you get in your state, it depends on the interpetation by the trucking or insurance company.

In MO C & I (Careless and Imprudent) is 3 points by state LEO and 2 Points by local LEO.

Wouldn't it be nice if all the states could agree? SC is also a "no-tolerance" state, which means if you are going 45.01 mph in a 45 zone they can ticket you. Don't be "careless" in South Carolina~:biggrin_25512:

Yeah mate and if 1 of those companies does give you a break really show your appreciation for them there seems to be to many drivers whining over spilt milk in here instead of just being grateful they've got a decent job.

I would rather have a driver with a ticket on his record, than one who doesn,t. Besides LEO,s don,t stop union drivers or inspect their trucks very often anyway. You need to clean out your own place before you hollar about someone else. Several years back one of our druggies jumped ship, moved in with a LOT lizard and went to work for roadway at victorville. Oh yes he had a clean license.
