i want to get Alberta class 1 driving licence. I've had illinois CDL for 3y.
In registry office I was told that I can't transfer my CDL, I can only transfer class 5 and do all tests required for class 1. They also said that I'll have to give away my CDL which I dont wanna do.
I also have normal driving licence from Poland (where I oryginaly come from), and I rather give away my polish licence than CDL.
In office they told me that it's illigal to own more than one DL and I'll have to give up both once I get canadian DL, and that they have system to check if I have any US record.
Do you think it's true that they can check my US record if I apply as polish citizen with my polish licence only and didn't mention my CDL.
    Thanks for replys

It is true, a US CDL is not recognized here for transfer as it is considered a second license, which is illegal here. You will not be able to keep your Polish license either.

The CDL is not part of our licensing system & is only recognized really by the dot really as a US driver being qualified to operatle his/her equipment.

Especially in Alberta, it is mandatory to have an air brake endorsement to even get your class 1 license, you will have to take that from a recognized school. I would also recommend a PDIC course as well (Professional Driver Improvement), it is required for some endorsements.

And, yes it is true that they can & WILL check your US record, all Canadian provinces have recipricosity agreements with all US states. It's part of NAFTA agreement & I believe FAST

If you have your CDL in the US, you may have to get an air ticket, that you will have to check with the motor vehicle branch.
I am a mechanic and let my class one lapse when I was in Alberta because of the cost of the medical not being covered by the shop I was at, when I moved to BC I had to do the air ticket and went for a ride with an instructor at a driving school, then did the test. Freightliner paid for it.
With all the BS happening you do not want to start your life in Canada with a fine and demerits from trying to keep an invalid licence.
    Play it straight and welcome.
If I would have changed my licence immediately upon coming back to B.C. it would have still been in there records. I waited and they deleted that years.
It still only cost about $400 dollars for the whole thing.

    Thanks for quick reps

I guess I'll have some learning to do - which I don't mind
and some spendings which I do mind.

I thought some provinces just transferred US CDLs the same they do with licenses from other provinces?

Surrendering your U.S. CDL (and your Polish license) is not only the right (legal) way to do it, but also the only way as your Polish license is not recognized via the Reciprocal Licensing Agreement and you would most likely have to complete the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Program first.

Nope a CDL has never been transferable to my knowledge, it's usually considered a second license, which is illegal here.
