9 speed has the same gear ratios as the high split on the 18.
13 speed has the same gear ratios as the 18, but you can't get to the high split in the low range.

Mack, Freightliner, Kenworth, Volvo...
They all use Eaton-Fuller or Allison trannies. 9s and 13s use the high split of the lower gears only, 9 uses the high split of all gears. A 9 can be converted to either 13 or 18. If the tranny is a 9C, it only takes running an air line and getting the right knob. If a regular 9, you will have to get the splitter box and modify the front drive shaft as well.
As far as I know, there is no longer a conversion for 10. A 10 is a 10 is a 10. If you want a 15, you order a 15. Gears in a 15 are stand-alone and not able to be split. At least, that's what I've been told. I am far from being an expert. -
Give me a set of sticks
I prefer the 18 box. More gear selection for different applications. 53 tons and off road. Old time log trucks we ran 10's and 13's w/ a brownie.

Someone just posted a diagram of the 13 and 18 I'll see if I can find it.. -
goodchoice10, Injun and lostNfound Thank this.

Logan: is that action on the knob or on the transmission itself?

I have a 18 spd that I shift like a 13 all the time. I would still rather have the 18 because of the choice in reverse gears.
